Part of the reason is farmers face some steep barriers during the three-year transition period required to achieve USDA Organic Certification. And while more organic farmland is good for all of us, it’s difficult for farmers to make the change because they don’t see a return on investment immediately.
So we’re out to change it. We’re supporting farmers in transition to organic with cereals made with crops from transitional farmland. To make them, we’ve partnered with Quality Assurance International (QAI) to create a “Certified Transitional” standard. Just like the USDA Organic or Non-GMO Project Verified labels, the “Certified Transitional” badge will symbolize goods produced at the highest standards during a farmer’s transition to organic farming while paying them fair wages. It’s a badge we hope you’ll see not just on Kashi packaging, but on packaging everywhere so we can make a difference in the food system together.
