My last box of Autumn Wheat was basically a bag of pulverized biscuits. I got maybe two bowls of cereal out of the box.

I realize the product will have some settling, but more than half the box is an issue. I will continue to buy this product unless this happens again at which point I will stop. -

I tried this cereal about 1 year ago and thought it was too sweet then; I tried it again and the current box is still too sweet. I will try the Post brand next with no sugar. I was looking for an organic cereal. I think you should consider offering this cereal in a ‘natural’ state i.e. unsweetened!!

Just What’s in Those Natural Flavors Anyway…?
The exact definition of natural flavorings & flavors from Title 21, Section 101, part 22 of the Code of Federal Regulations is as follows:
“The term natural flavor or natural flavoring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.”
In other words, natural flavors can be pretty much anything approved for use in food.

My wife sends me to the store to get the Kashi cereal that says “lightly sweet.” Turns out she’s talking about the Autumn Wheat product. Last week I couldn’t find it, and thought that the store was out or no longer stocking it. Today I found it, but the “lightly sweet” tag was not on it. There was, however, a “New Look” tag in the corner of the box. I told my wife that they didn’t change anything except the box. She thinks it’s not the same product. Who’s right?

Kashi won’t reveal what “natural flavors” means in their ingredients list. Unfortunately, many people, including myself have to stay off of certain “natural flavors”. Kashi seems more concerned with keeping the “proprietary” ingredients of their suppliers protected more than the health of their poetntial customer. I don’t buy any products that won’t tell me straigh-out what their “natural” flavors really are:prorietary or not. Too many food manufacturers are puttin too much crap in our foods and I’m tired of it. Grow up, Kashi, and be honest about what you are puting in your foods.

Kashi Customer Service Team 8 months agoHello, We are sorry that our service didn’t make you smile. All of our flavors include 100% all natural ingredients and the flavor blends are proprietary from our suppliers. If you have a specific sensitivity to an ingredient, we can ask the supplier if that ingredient is within the list of flavors but our suppliers will not provide the entire blend. Please know that we appreciate your concern and apologize for the situation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Best of health. From Kathy at Kashi

What is the Natural Flavor in these cereals? I see that it is not listed as organic. Can a small percentage of ingredients not be organic and the whole product can still be certified as organic? From my research on natural flavors, it means HVP (hydrolyzed vegetable protein). Which is a rather unnatural process and opens all sorts of issues concerning the source of the vegetable protein. I hope you have a positive explanation. I would certainly miss being able to eat this cereal which I have enjoyed. (I just passed on buying some at a great sale price because I noticed this “mystery” ingredient as I am learning to be more alert to the ingredients of foods.)

Yes, I had the same question. This seems very suspicious and un-Kashi-like. Why not disclose? Would anyone from Kashi like to comment please?
Interestingly, there is an “ingredient decoder” on the kashi home page… too bad the link is broken and it doesn’t seem to work right now.

You know, I am a regular Kashi consumer. I buy many of your products and am usually satisfied. With healthy eating and dieting, I try to find products that give you the biggest bang for your calorie buck. Now, I normally don’t buy cereals this high in calorie, and when I do, I make sure there’s a lot per serving. I looked and saw that wow, 28 biscuits! I will definitely enjoy that! But when I poured myself a bowl, I was deeply disappointed in how SMALL THE BISCUITS ARE. Now when you count out 28, it hardly looks like enough to sustain a full belly for the morning. And it didn’t. Won’t be buying this again. If I try buying a high calorie cereal, I’ll stick with my sugar-laden Kellogs Mini-Wheats because at least they are big and can fill a bowl. Thanks.

I’ll bet you’re among the 87 million or so weight challenged people in the United States because these kind of rationalizations lead to weight gain and or health problems.

LOL, a serving of Shredded Wheat is 2g LESS than a serving of Kashi Autumn Harvest. You said sugar-laden, I’m going to take that as frosted. Same amount of calories. Shredded Wheat has 12g of sugar, Kashi has 7g. Kashi has 1g of fiber and 2g of protein MORE than SW. Tay, you should really measure out your cereal, if you think you’re getting more with Shredded Wheat, you’re likely consuming more than a single serving.
This is a picture of Kashi and Regular Shredded Wheat (the frosted might be a bit bigger): http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d13/danakscully64/Food/IMG_8311.jpg

This is one of my favorite cereals to eat with fresh fruits and berries. The cereal is terrific by itself, with milk or soy milk, but the subtle, neutral flavors of Autumn Wheat can be greatly enhanced by the addition of any combination of bananas, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, and/or raspberries. I recommend mixing in your own favorite fruits. The possibilities are endless!

I layer yogurt, fruit and crushed cereal, Kashi of course, in a glass for a great treat. Layer several times, repeating each ingredient.

I tried Autumn Wheat for the first time last week. It is surprisingly good. I sprinkle dried cranberries on it and pig out. :-)

I just bought a box of Autum Wheat and it will definitely be a staple in my pantry. Replacing Nature Valley Granola bars. I will have to try it with my oatmeal and fruit, it sounds pretty good as a crunchy topping and additional grain.
HBGidget..As far as the breaking up, I wonder if that has to do with the Organic wheat, maybe other cereals have things in them that contribrute to a tighter binding biscuit. Just a thought….You actually through out the crumbs??? You can always use them as toppings on a variet of things, yogurt, yes try as a replacement for breading fish, chicken or veggies, or just as a snack mic with nuts or dired fruit. Come on you cannot be serious that the broken up biscuits give you such distress that you have no use for them???
-
Does anybody else have the problem of there always being a ton of broken up “crumbs” in the bottom of the bag? It’s not from any one store mishandling the boxes because no matter where I buy it from, I find at least two cups of broken bits in each package, every time. And it’s not me being careless, slamming the boxes around, either. In fact ever since I first noticed this problem, I started being extra careful with this cereal. I also have compared it to other shredded wheat brands and found that none of them break up as much. It’s soooo annooooying to have to throw out all that broken “sawdust”! Hmmmm…. Maybe somebody has a recipe for using up all those crumbs – Maybe they would make good breading for fish or chicken…. Help!

I do, and I am sure everyone else does as well, since this is definitely not an issue with a single store. I just checked how much is lost in these crumbs; it weighed 6.7 oz which is 38 percent of the total weight purchased. I am not the type of person who would use these crumbs in any other way so this just becomes waste for me. I so like the product but I can’t see paying for all this waste.

I forgot to mention Cinnamon Harvest, also terrific.

Both Autumn Wheat and Island Vanilla are terrific. Not too sweet and very tasty.

Great cereal.

We like Autumn Wheats, but would like it even better if it weren’t so sweet. We limit the salt and sugar in our diets and this product seems too sweet to us.
-
Delicious! Great for people who have to watch their sodium intake. I like it because it’s not overly sweet. My husband eats a lot of this.

I take a ziplock bag of Autumn Wheat to work with me each day. It is a healthy snack and keeps me from heading to the candy and chip machine down the hall.
