Kashi's Response to Recent News

You may have seen or heard about a photo recently shared on our Facebook page that questions the ingredients used in our foods. We want you to know that we are as passionate about these issues as you are. Here’s a video message we’ve created to share our perspective and some additional details about what we’re doing to support positive change in the food system.

  • We support close to 10,000 acres of organic cropland in the U.S. and source about 30 million pounds of organic ingredients each year, an amount that has nearly tripled since 2005.
  • We are also partners with the Non-GMO Project. Seven of our cereals currently carry the “Non-GMO Project Verified” seal and we are continuing to work through the process with many of our other foods as well.
  • We maintain stringent control standards to ensure that our raw materials contain no harmful pesticide residues and all of our ingredients fall well within the USDA guidelines. We’re confident that our products are free of substances that would pose a health risk to our consumers.

Kashi remains passionately committed to helping our consumers enjoy positive nutrition with both natural and organic foods, just as we have for the last 25 years.

Your reply would seem more genuine had it not been for your refusal to support Prop 37. Working at a supermarket, I will now steer customers away from any of your “natural” cereals and granola to a competitor whose products are certified.

Like the previous poster, I spent a lot of time getting the word out on the Yes on 37 campaign in California. It was a grassroots effort that was up against the $46 MILLION dollars of negative ads, lies and deception. Kashi contributed over $600,000 to help spread lies and deception to deliberately deny people the right to know what is in the food they eat. As a result you will never have a place at my table again. And, oh yeah, I am asking everyone I know to join me in this boycott.

My family and friends poured our hearts and hours of work into getting Prop 37 passed, so we could have a simple label to know what we are eating and feeding our families. Kashi made the decision to fight back by contributing money to the lies that we all had to sit and watch on the television ads. We have to live with the fact that money bought off this proposition. You have to live with the fact that you are the opposition that funded the restriction of our right to know what is in our food. I choose to support companies have the integrity to stand against the lies and deceit. You can’t have it both ways. Live with your decision. You get what you pay for.

I wish I could give Kashi my full blessing. But voting NO on 37 means I cannot endorse Kashi. A Yes on 37 vote I would scream from the rooftops on how good Kashi is.

I live in CA and want GMOs to be labeled. I read the recent New York Times article and was disgusted with Kashi’s non-support and your parent company’s support of opposition to the the new California ballot initiative. I’ve always liked Heart to Heart and your bars but clearly, you are not the natural/organic company I want you to be. Pathetic.

No more dollars to support your junk food parent.

I think many of the people here mislead themselves. Kashi has always been transparent. They label organic products as organic, and other products that aren’t 100% organic are not labeled organic. They have said all along that they are working to switch to non-GMO ingredients, but that it is an ongoing process and there is still much to be done. They have already made great strides in how they source their ingredients and even though they haven’t reached the ideals they set for themselves, they are still trying, unlike most other companies who don’t even bother and just load on the salt, sugar and chemicals. It amazes me how people can tear down those who try to do good and ignore the many who aren’t even trying.
One person said that because not all of Kashi’s products are 100% organic and non-GMO they were switching back to Captain Crunch. This tells me this person was never really interested in nutrition and was simply looking for an excuse to return to old habits. Someone who is really interested in nutrition would still opt for the foods that are at least somewhat healthier.

In other words "although we claim it’s natural, it really can’t be because most crops produced in the US are genetically modified. It’s their fault. They made us call “genetically modified” food natural…and never mind the pesticides." We follow USDA guidlines…what a copout! Typical corporate bs damage control. Kashi got caught. I’ll finish what I have..while I look for replacements. If people accept this kind of practice, we take a big step backward.

    Kashi…you suck.

Rubbish, I say to Kashi! They are backpedalling because they were caught. I was once a customer of Kashi. Bought tons of cereal. Fool me once, but never again. My few remaining boxes of Kashi will be ground to smitherines in my BlendTec today …. and I am having the Hazardous Waste Material crew come in to remove it as the garbagemen refuse to touch it. Watch for it on YouTube. But more importantly, my recent order to Amazon did not contain a single Kashi product … instead, their competitors got this business and all future business. Hey, that’s life in the fast lane when you try to decieve people. You want my business back…. drop every GMO product you make….and I’ll consider it.

Sounds like excuse making to me. You should run for office. What I want to know is, what is your definition of “organic”? Genetically modified roundup ready soy does not fit into my definition of organic in any way, shape, or form. I don’t care about who you’re partnering with, how many acres of of cropland you support, or any USDA guidelines (which are questionable at best, btw). When the label says organic and it isn’t that’s deceitful and shameful.

After reading the Kashi message at our local Hannaford, I was nauseated. I am a breast canister survivor. Because of thatt, for the past 2 or 3 years I have eaten Kashi cereal. I just wanted to eat something natural and healthy. I am sick, and saddened that Kashi was not in control of your"organic" feilds. Unfortunately I will not feel comfortable ever eating that cereal again, when I fight every day to be as healthy as I can!

    Thank God I never gave up on my child hood favorite Captain Crunch. This Kashi stuff could kill me. Come on man! The Kashi Cereal is still a great alternative. Climb back into your bomb shelter and come out in another 20 years.;

Frankly, you’d be a lot better off sticking to Captain Crunch. Or is that, Captain Crunch sticking to you? Either way, take the time to learn more about GMOs and you will change your tune. You’ll never look at a box of Kashi the same again.

I’m right their with you BuckBrown! Kashi is still a much better alternative! All these people freaking out are being absolutely ridiculous! Especialy since Kashi has started to put all their cereals through Non GMO verification!

Not all of Kashi’s products are labeled USDA Organic, not to mention anything labeled “natural” is more than likely going to contain GMOs, including the fruits and vegetables sold at the grocery store. If you’re that concerned, eat nothing but organic foods.

At the 0:20 mark, the video states “while it’s likely that some of our foods contain GMOs…” and at the 1:38 mark on the video, it states “Regarding pesticides, Kashi uses a variety of both organically grown and conventionally grown crops to make our foods.” How can something that is labeled “USDA Organic” be allowed to contain foods that have had pesticides sprayed on them (whether or not you could detect traces on the food), or be processed with food that has been genetically modified? Why am I paying almost twice as much for your food, when it contains the same unnatural ingredients that other food does?!

Not all of Kashi’s products are organic. The ones that are cannot contain conventionally grown foods. The other products can.

Total lack of transparency! Your commericals show many “Natural” fields and selection of ingredients. Why do you not show a crop duster spraying Roundup on the same? If you want to be a leader – be one! Otherwise get out of the way and let others lead. This attitude of saying/showing one process and selling another will only make Kashi (Kellogg) a former favorite in many stores. Put up all the video messages you want about why you do not specifically tell us what in in your products but it is the message in your ads that is misleading consumers.
    Shame on you!

I agree 100% with Stiches. I had no idea Kellogg’s bought Kashi in 2000. Had I, I NEVER would have been such a loyal customer all these years. We have been regular buyers of everything from cereal to crackers – but no more. INTENTIONALLY HIDING WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR FOOD IS EVIL! Pure and simple. We are feeding our children you greedy bastards. I am simply disgusted and will never purchase another of your products. I am telling all my friends and family to do the same.

Leading?? From behind, maybe. THe only reason they are “leading” is because they got caught and are trying to make up for lost time … which they won’t because their customer base is heading out the door. You want a leader, then try Nature’s Path or similiar. Remember, there is no such thing as being “a bit pregnant”!
