Our Commitment is 25+ Years Strong

Since 1984, Kashi has cared about making foods with the health of people and planet in mind. We've stayed true to our 7 whole grain roots and remain passionate about providing a progressive and holistic approach to nutrition. Now we're taking our mission a step further. Today, only 1% of U.S. cropland is organic and around 70% of packaged foods contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms). At Kashi, we want to do our part in creating a more balanced food system. We're still small at heart, but big enough now to make a meaningful impact.

Eleven Foods Already Non-GMO Project Verified.

This long-term commitment follows the Non-GMO Project Verification of eleven Kashi foods earlier this year, including:

A Rigorous Verification Process

  • The Non-GMO Project is the leading independent verifier of non-GMO foods and the only third-party verification system in the U.S.
  • All Kashi foods that have met its rigorous standard will carry the Non-GMO Project Verified seal.
  • The process is multi-step and involves segregation, traceability, risk assessment, and ongoing testing of all major GMO risk ingredients at critical control points.
  • Verification can take several months depending on many factors.

“When people see the Non-GMO Project verification mark on a product, they can trust that it’s been made in compliance with the best possible practices for GMO avoidance.”

-- Megan Westgate, Non-GMO Project executive director

Kashi’s Non-GMO Project Verified Product Commitment.

Our commitment: By the end of 2015 over half our food will be Non-GMO Project Verified.* But we won't stop there. We'll continue to increase the use of organic and Non-GMO ingredients where possible while making sure to continue to provide the positive nutrition you expect from us.*based on pounds

Why 2015? There simply aren't enough non-GMO and organic ingredients, and it takes time to partner with farmers to convert conventional farms. Once we obtain these ingredients, we need to make sure the nutrition and taste of the food is consistent with the high quality you expect from us.

I have notices that many other providers of convenient, healthy, frozen foods use a bio-degradable PAPER tray under their entrees. WHY do you STILL use plastic ? Fortunately in our community, the plastic trays can be recycled, and I make a point to do so, however, this may not be a reasonable option in other locations. WHY NOT MAKE THE SHIFT TO (Preferrably recycled) PAPER trays ???

ALERT! I bought Toasted Berry Crumble Cereal. I liked it…but when reading the igredients I found out that it’s sweetened with Brown Rice Cereal! According to researchers @ Darmouth College Arsenic has been found in brown rice syrup! Arsenic is toxic!I had to throw out the whole bag. I want my money back!

I love Kashi cereals because they’re the only brand that doesn’t contain milk! But why then do the Kashi bars all or mostly all contain milk? It’s an allergan.

It is highly encouraging to hear that Kashi is committed to the non-GMO verification project. I am a little disappointed, though, that your goal is only “more than 50%”. I have enjoyed many of the products you already label as non-GMO and organic and, if your advertising is genuine, then yours is the very sort of company I would lean toward in my purchases. The actions of your parent company, however, cast a big black shadow on the question of whether your advertising objective is genuine at all given that Kellogg’s just invested nearly $800k to stop GMO labelling in California. As much as it pained me to do so, as soon as that came to light, I switched to Nature’s Path and other competitors that chose to put their money where their mouth is. I will continue to do so until I find out Kellogg’s, across all of its brands, has committed to the labeling effort. I don’t expect the entire company to go non-GMO. As you mention above, at the moment only 1% of US cropland is considered organic qualified. However, I do insist on knowing which products are GMO certified and which are not so I know where to put MY money and what to feed my family. Until then, Kashi, Morning Star nor Kellogg’s will be getting any business from us and I plan to campaign as loudly as possible to ensure my extended friends and family are equally informed and can make their own, educated decisions.

I agree with your comment about putting money where your mouth is. I don’t think it should take them another 2.5 years to get all of their grain products non-GMO.

What’s sad and amazing to me is how many people want to whine and cry and blame someone for their actions. Reading these comments is pathetic and ridiculous. Where on Kashi’s products do they claim to be Organic and a Non GMO food? They don’t! So you people bought their products knowing this and then because they release a statement that they are working towards becoming non GMO (which doesn’t happen overnight for you people that are upset the wait time), anyways they release a statement and everyone wants to get on here and gripe and moan. They never deceived you and made false statements. I knew Kashi was not labeled as non GMO yet I CHOSE to purchase their products occasionally anyways due to the amount of protein and fiber it had. I CHOSE this as did you guys. They didn’t force you to buy their products. Good grief…take some responsibility for your actions. People are so lazy and just want to be negative. GROW UP!

My favorite cereals were Black Current (“U”), Mountain Medley Granola and Chocolate Almond Granola. All three have apparently been discontinued. Why does this happen to me so often? Were these cereals dropped because they included GMO products?

Thanks for posting. It’s a bummer when you can’t find your favorite cereals. The Kashi granolas were discontinued but Kashi U is still available under a new name, Black Currant Walnut with a white box. These changes were not made because of GMOs. The granolas were discontinued because they didn’t have enough fans and Kashi U was changed to better describe the flavors and fit with our full line of cereals on store shelves. Hopefully this answers your question. Thanks for being a fan.

Oh, I see that you are part of the Non-GMO project. That’s great! The retailers who started the Non-GMO Project were motivated by a simple idea: they believed that consumers in North America should have access to clearly-labeled non-GMO food and products, now and in the future. (directly from their web site)

What about your parent company? I understand that Kellogg spent close to $800k to defeat California prop 37. That’s weird. Kashi’s profits are going toward defeating what you state you support. Unless you only support GMO labeling as a marketing gimmick. OH! NOW THAT MAKES SENSE NOW!

Your advertisement campaign featuring Bethany Pfohl walking through the rain forest looking for cocoa beans is a farce. Kashi sells lies and GMO foods. I really don’t see how anyone who works at Kashi would want to be associated with this kind of false advertising.

I will never buy anything from Kashi or Kellogg again.

Oh, one last thing. For the record, we do not have enough data on GMO foods. I am not necessarily against GMO foods, but putting Natural or Organic on packaging SHOULD mean that the ingredients are from a more “natural” source – like good old fashioned cross breeding of plants to emphasize the qualities that you want.

It is pretty sad to see how our government is in bed with the chemical and seed companies along with the food industry. What has been mentioned here in these postings is right on. I used to eat Kashi and loved their products until I found out they supported Prop 37 and was not really organic. How can you trust anyone, you can’t. I want to know how Kashi, Kellogs and the other companies feel about poisoning the American people, not just the food but the soil on the farmlands. I am guessing the farmers are ignorant about how the GMO products. I feel they don’t even care about the pesticides going into the soil and food they produce. These pesticides stay in the soil more than ten years. We will eventually be like the Providence in China where they have to pollinate the fruit trees with a feather because of the pesticide contamination. Oh wait a minute, I forgot, this is all about money, greed and corruption from our government to the chemical and seed companies to the food producers. What a disappointment with you Kashi. You’re commercials are fraudulent. You don’t look for the best product that can be produced, you look for the best GMO products that can poison America with Monsanto’s help. Ok, I am done now. Oh by the way, the word is getting out about boycotting the companies that supported Prop 37.

I see all of this misguided emotion directed toward Kashi over Prop 37 in California. I did some reading and found that even the Los Angeles Times recommended against Prop 37 because it was sloppily written and could affect the retailer in litigation far more than the food manufacturer. Enforcement was left primarily to citizens who could sue if they thought there was noncompliance without evidence. There was even a question if any pressed or milled grain could use the word natural in their labeling. I also see all of this misinformation about Kashi’s parent company. It’s not Monsanto – it’s Kellogg Company. For those of us interested in non-GMO products, we can continue to use the nongmoproject.org site to find brands that support our efforts. To ensure effective change, let’s rewrite the language and get a more responsible measure on the ballet again. If this is done, I’m sure it will see a broader base of support among a traditionally supportive media. In the meantime, Kashi has given us some non-GMO selections we can choose to buy or exercise our rights as consumers to buy something else.

Kashi already has numerous products with the non-GMO product verification. They purchase 35 million pounds of organic ingredients annually… I think that alone indicates that they are about health and organic standards, but it does take time to convert conventional farms in today’s soceity.

Dear Kashi, I am a consumer of your products but I am disappointed in your company for pandering to anti-science nonsense concerning GMO. GMO is one of the most scientifically tested products in the history of the world and has been shown to be nutritionally no different from certified organic crops. All you are doing is feeding into a misinformed constituency of consumers that have been fooled by scare tactics not based in science. Having objections to a corporations ethics is not an indication that their products are poisonous. Please help inform consumers that if they wish to purchase products that are non-gmo labeled that is what you are helping to provide for them. If you want to create products for people who do not wish to consume GMO that is fine but, You need to make clear that this decision is not based on SCIENCE but only consumer demand.

    1. User_48
      ehargis6 6 months ago

Blove, I’ve never responded to a comment thread before… first time for everything.

I completely agree that consumer demand and misinformation can be a powerful tool for spreading absolutely absurd information- years ago people were scared of oranges because word spread that they were high in cholesterol; therefore, grocery stores were forced to market them as a low cholesterol food in order to save crops. We know that oranges are a zero cholesterol food because cholesterol comes from meat products- but consumers had their minds made up!

I did want to point out that because an idea is heavily scientifically tested, doesn’t mean it’s safe. After studying nutritional sciences and gaining experience in a biomolecular chemistry lab, it’s my conclusion that we can’t “blanket” statement a GMO and say that it’s a safe practice, because all molecules are different, and we have to consider all biologically active forms within the human body to be able to determine whether the modified molecule is safe or not. When we start genetically modifying molecules, we can’t always predict how they will act in our body (maybe an enantiomer of the modified compound produces birth defects in a fetus- it’s happened!), so the GMO concept is a very valid concern for the general public.

      Thanks for listening!

According to Organic Consumers Assoc., Kelloggs (parent corp of Kashi) donated $791,000 to defeat GMO labeling Prop 37. If Kashi is really for Non GMO — they should donate substantially and very publicly to GMO label efforts in other states! Until that happens, will no longer recommend your products to my thousands of students at Wellness Education Center here in Montana. Also, since Kashi granola bars are one of your best sellers, it seems good business sense to go straight to Non-GMO and then fully certified organic ASAP, not waiting till 2015!

The company’s stance is that only 1% of cropland is organic so they’re working to convert more farms so that by 2015, over half their food can be free of GMOs.

    LIES
If you are so committed to Non-GMO foods then why did you try so hard to kill Prop 37 in CA which would have identified foods containing GMOs.
You people suck. Not buying anything from you anymore.

Sorry Mr DeSouza, this just doesn’t cut it.

We know you threw piles of cash into deceiving the Californian people to vote against their right to know.

We know you and your biotech bullies used fear and intimidation as tactics.

We know you care more about your bottom line than our health or the environment.

So I want you to know this: I will never, never buy any of your products again.
And this: I will tell everyone I know exactly what your company has been up to.

You are flat out lying! You donated millions against proposition 37 so now Americans will not get the right to know what GMOs are lingering in our foods. Few know that you are actually a sub company of Kellogg’s. Lies and deception have this once loyal customer saying goodbye to you forever! Now I am on a mission to tell everyone I know about your disgusting 7grains!

    BEWARE of the Kashi deception!
I am another one of many here saying goodbye to you Kashi!
Again you are misleading consumers to think you care about the GMO issue when in fact you stand against Proposition 37 which would require labeling of GMOs.
Shame on you! But we shouldn’t be surprised seeing you are really just the Kellogg’s company trying to turn a buck under the organic umbrella!

Good bye Kashi….my eyes are blind to your name and products and company, as well as all of the others that have supported the NO GMO corruption! Even if you had a No GMO on your label tomorrow I wouldn’t purchase anything from you. NO TRUST whatsoever now!!! You eat your products!!

Kashi, Congratulations! You’ve lost another long time customer because of your stance on and funding against Prop 37 in labeling GMO foods. If I lived in CA I would have voted for the labeling of all products and it’s because of jerks like you and your parent companies that the prop didn’t pass. What kind of hypocrisy is this, David DeSousa talking about making a commitment to non GMO ingredients while the parent company Kellogg is donating tons of money toward not labeling products that contain GMO ingredients??? Let’s get real here David! I now watch your TV commercials in disgust, with the woman in the jungle hand picking cacao as if you’re products were actually nutritious, and want to puke up all the years of Kashi products I ever consumed. Stop bullshitting us, you must think we are a bunch of idiots. Making your products seem that they are all natural and healthy all these years is an insult to your customers. Fine if you want to put unhealthy ingredients in your products, but don’t lie about it, don’t make it seem you care about health when evidence shows you don’t. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER KASHI PRODUCT EVER. 7 GMO grains on a mission to sicken the population! You’re disgusting!

Kashi, I will never buy another one of your products. I will be joining the boycott of your products unless you both publicly endorse GMO labeling and remove the “Natural” label from your products that contain GMOs. You are deceitful. As Mike Adams the Health Ranger said, "It’s time to defeat evil in the food industry and stop the vicious betrayal of consumers by so-called “natural” brands!"

Kashi, I’m never buying your products again. Your work against Prop 37 is absolutely horrific. I live in Ohio and if Prop 37 had been on our ballot I would have voted for it. If you can’t support labeling, which is so minor, what else don’t you support? No frankenfood for my family, thanks.

I live in B.C. and had purchased Kashi products…I was not following Prop. 37 really close but knew enough about it. I was utterly shocked to learn a company that gives the impression on this website that your company wants to reduce the amount of GMO ingredients in your foods and your food labels and packaging for your products gives consumers the impression that you are very concerned about the health of your customers who purchase your products. You talk about reducing amount of GMO ingredients used to make your foods on your website yet I have been advised by someone this evening that your company gave funds to support California’s Prop 37. I was so upset when I was told this and will never trust what I read on your company’s website or labels ever again. You have just lost a customer.

I live in Idaho, and support California’s Prop 37. Had I lived in California I would have voted for it. Now that I know your company does not support Prop 37, and will not be for some time, I will no longer buy your products. I have eaten Kashi cereals for years, and what I have now, is going into the trash. I am so mad that I have been putting GMOs into my body. GMOs are terrible, and you have officially lost a long time customer.

2015 is way too long. Kashi should have been non-GMO from the start. I will be trashing everything I have that is Kashi in my cubboards. You say natural, but there is nothing about GMO’s that is natural. I will no longer be buying Kashi, now or ever. So embarrassed I supported a company that went against Prop 37.

I’ll never buy another Kashi product again since the company has confirmed they DO use GMO corn in their products. This whole ploy above is a joke. It was a good company until Kellogg became involved and their corporate greed ruined it. The brand is effectively being destroyed by its management. The joke is on David DeSouza.

Most corn and soy ingredients come from genetically engineered crops, which have never even been proven safe. In fact, scientists have linked GMOs to serious health problems. In Cornucopia Institute tests, researchers detected GMO material in 100 percent of the soy in Kashi GoLean. “It is clear from the percentages that this was not accidental contamination, but deliberate use of GMOs,” says Vallaeys.

Kashi is owned by food industry giant Kellogg Company, which also markets Bear Naked, a non-organic granola. The Cornucopia Institute also points out that the cereal-making giant has no policy against the use of toxic pesticides, hexane, a harmful solvent used in non-organic soybean processing, and GMO ingredients.
