Stride right

Challenge Yourself for: 24 Hours

Lots of runners try to take their workout to the next level by increasing their pace. Another way to challenge yourself is to lengthen your stride, a change some find less stressful for their knees and lower back. Today, challenge yourself to vary your stride, aiming for a glide rather than a pounding pace.

I have been exercising on and off for most of my life and never finding something I really can stick to. I used to take 5 mile walks on public trails in England, but the urban setting I am in discourages this sort of walking, expecially all the concrete. I also have an interest in Yoga, but my back won’t allow it. So, this leaves me with small walks, for now, and I will use the glising technique to protect my irritated lower back.

During my run last night I changed my stride to be longer while going uphill. Lengthening my stride actually made it easier for me to run up that hill and I felt like I had a better workout!

Last week I joined a community gym where I spend most of my time on the treadmill. I have been walking to warm up at a pace of 3.5 and jogging slowly at 4.5. This week my goal is to jog 5 extra minutes and pick up the pace half the time to 5.0.

I am going to increase my pace on the treadmill and beginning running in my neighborhood to prepare to run/walk the Corporate Challenge 5k race coming up in May.
