Try a natural headache remedy

This challenge is for people who experience headaches. The next time you get a mild headache, try an alternative remedy such as an ice pack, warm bath, or breathing technique. If you find something that really works, share it with everyone here.

If your headaches persist, they could be a sign of more serious health problems. See your physician.

Every time I get a headache I always try drinking a glass of water first and waiting a couple minutes. A headache is usually a sign of dehydration and the water almost always works. I try only to take as many drugs as are necessary

I agree. I try to drink lots of water, it almost always helps. Also sometimes taking a super hot shower helps. When it’s really bad, I use pressure points in my hands and feet. If that doesn’t work, then I go for the pills.

I leave pills as a lost resort as well. I also try drinking water, massage (most of my headaches are tension related), and sometime the only thing that works for me is a nap. I try to listen to my body instead of dulling it with pills.

I used sunbreeze oil today. It helped a lot. Honestly I’m not even sure what all it includes…but I got it from my naturopath. I’m thinking it’s pretty natural…you rub it on your temples…and it tingles your headache away…

Water works too… as well as breathing.

If you get a cool wash cloth and put it over your eyes and forehead, it helps the headache go away. Sometimes I also use my pressure points to try to get the headache out as well.

I get migraine headaches, but because of other health issues that I have to take medication for, I prefer to not take pills for my headaches. I appreciate some of the suggestions here and I will try them, especially the water. I’ve never heard of sunbreeze oil, but I plan on looking into it. Usually sleep is the only thing that will get rid of it, but when my headache is extreme I can’t sleep, so I use an ice pack on the back of my neck. This usually helps enough for me to get to sleep and get rid of it. Thank you to everyone who has posted such great ideas!

Yesterday I woke up with a bad headache. I tried the water several times during the day. By early afternoon I decided to try the hot shower. It did really help my neck and shoulder muscles to relax which took some of the edge off the headache. Later I tried the ice pack (which is my usual and generally works pretty well), but with as cold as it was here last night, I couldn’t keep it on for long. I was determined not to take medicine, so last night I finally fell asleep and it was gone this morning. Thank you everyone for all your tips! I still need to find out what sunbreeze oil is and where I can get it.

I am also some one who suffers from migraines. I am a hairstylist at an Aveda salon which sells an oil composition called Blue Oil. It’s main ingredient is peppermint oil. It works really well when rubbed on the temples, back of the neck, and other pressure points related to the head (such as between your thumb and first finger on your hand). Also massaging your feet can help. I like to use Foot Releif, also an Aveda product, which also contains peppermint oil. I really try to stick to natural remedies, but with migraines it can be difficult. I will have to try some of the other remedies suggested.

I use Sunbreeze aromatherapy essential oil for headache relief. A couple small drops on each temple and a drop behind the neck.

I just started this challenge today but I’ve used vicks to help my headaches. I sometimes get migrains and a little vicks vapor rub with a cold towel works wonders. Its like I can feel this product just soaking the migrain away. Or if its a sinus headache, the vicks on your the tip of your eyebrow with a hot towel really helps the sinus pressure break up! its an inexpensive rememdy that works for me. A little jar vicks vapor rup last a long time! I’m gonna try the water thing though. I usually don’t drink much water but I never thought of it getting rid of a headache. Thanks!

Water is the best solution I have found to date. However, when my sinuses start to ache I put a little eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil in a deep bowl pour steeming hot water in and cover my head and the bowl with a towel. Then I do some deep breathing.

A COOLER ROOM , LYING FLAT AND MEDITATING TO SOOTHING NATURE SOUNDS WITH CONTROLLED BREATHING ALWAYS TAKES MY SEVERE MIGRAINESAWAY. IT IS THE ONLY THING THAT WORKS. WHEN THE MEDS ARE A CONSTANT FAILURE ALL THE TIME WITH HORRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS!

Aveda sells something called blue oil, you rub it on your temples, and within minutes, a headache is gone. It’s also great for neck pain.

I used to suffer from terrible migraines. Sometimes, they would be so unbearable, Id go to the ER, and be unable to function for up to 3 or 4 days. I’d lose my vision, and my parts of body would go numb. After more than a decade, I went to a neurologist. He told my I had allergies, and my back/neck was extremely tense. I wasn’t particularly satified with that answer.

Ironically, years later, I joined martial arts. It helped a little bit. Several years down the road I joined a Kung Fu school. One of the first things I learned (it didn’t happen overnight) was how to physically relax my shoulders. My migraine issues were gone. After many doctors and er visits, and many different prescriptions, I learned that the problem was as simple as my posture. I still find it amazing. My neurologist was right! (I also found out I have some allergies also)

I never thought I would be able to gain control over my migraine headaches!

LOL. While I am all for Kung Fu for a variety of reason;, yoga, Tai Chi, or a variety of other activities may help. For me it was particularly useful sence there was such an emphasis on posture and body alignment. When was individually trained, it was noticed immediately by my teacher(s). Kinda like biofeedback. It has been 5 years without migraine issues. Although once I did have to go to the hospital since I still had pressure behind my eyes, and didn’t know why. The doc said that can be a part of migraines.

As a studying massage therapist, many times clearing the blood from your cranium can bring in fresh blood and fluids around the brain where its gotten clogged. If you press gently on the sides of your head and hold for about thirty seconds, your headache will often go away. This is what I use daily. Also, when one gets a tension headache, something that helps me is to massage the little ridge on the inside of the eyebrow where there is an indent in the bone for nerves to pass through. By vigorously massaging these nerves for a few seconds, it will stop the “my eyeballs are going to pop out of my head” feeling.
