Right after this posting, I had a migraine for 3 days, so I had the opportunity to try some of the remedies. The Vicks didn’t work, unless I didn’t use it correctly. Couldn’t find any peppermint oil or the other 2 oils. So I ended up taking 2 Imitrex tablets and 4 Imitrex shots to finally get rid of it. I have been online researching alternative remedies for migraines as opposed to prescription medications and am still researching!

I suffer from severe migraines frequently (3-5 times weekly). I’ve been to neurologists who prescribed me Topomax to try and help prevent having them as often. I have prescriptions for 85 mg. Imitrex tablets & the Imitrex Statdose injections to take when I have them. I wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning with one and depending on its severity, I take the tablet or give myself a shot. Sometimes, I’ve had to do both. And on a few occasions, neither have worked and I’ve had to go to the ER and get a Toradol shot. I was initially diagnosed in 1996 and they have become more severe and more frequent over the years. I have also had 5 back surgeries in the lumbar region of my back and my orthopedic surgeon seems to think that has what has caused them to increase. Sometimes I have the “auras” but most of the time I dont’. My family physician told me that if I would take a sudafed at night before i went to bed, I wouldn’t wake up with them. that worked for awhile, but only off and on. I cannot identify any triggers. I drink alot of water. I have tried the hot showers, cold compresses, etc. I have noticed that alot of the time I have big knots at the base of my skull alot of the time and i message these as much as i can tolerate. they are painful to push on but i have found as long as i can stand it, it does seem to help a little if i can message them and then put an ice pack on my neck. I’ve bought the special pillow designed for people with neck problems but my neck doesn’t hurt when i have the headaches. All the drs. tell me is I have migraines and we just have to try different medications until we find one that works. I’ve been doing this since 1996. You’d think they would have found one by now! I read everything I can on migraines. I read what all of you wrote about some of the homeopathic remedies and I will try some of them.

As a studying massage therapist, many times clearing the blood from your cranium can bring in fresh blood and fluids around the brain where its gotten clogged. If you press gently on the sides of your head and hold for about thirty seconds, your headache will often go away. This is what I use daily. Also, when one gets a tension headache, something that helps me is to massage the little ridge on the inside of the eyebrow where there is an indent in the bone for nerves to pass through. By vigorously massaging these nerves for a few seconds, it will stop the “my eyeballs are going to pop out of my head” feeling.

Aveda sells something called blue oil, you rub it on your temples, and within minutes, a headache is gone. It’s also great for neck pain.

A COOLER ROOM , LYING FLAT AND MEDITATING TO SOOTHING NATURE SOUNDS WITH CONTROLLED BREATHING ALWAYS TAKES MY SEVERE MIGRAINESAWAY. IT IS THE ONLY THING THAT WORKS. WHEN THE MEDS ARE A CONSTANT FAILURE ALL THE TIME WITH HORRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS!

Water is the best solution I have found to date. However, when my sinuses start to ache I put a little eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil in a deep bowl pour steeming hot water in and cover my head and the bowl with a towel. Then I do some deep breathing.

I just started this challenge today but I’ve used vicks to help my headaches. I sometimes get migrains and a little vicks vapor rub with a cold towel works wonders. Its like I can feel this product just soaking the migrain away. Or if its a sinus headache, the vicks on your the tip of your eyebrow with a hot towel really helps the sinus pressure break up! its an inexpensive rememdy that works for me. A little jar vicks vapor rup last a long time! I’m gonna try the water thing though. I usually don’t drink much water but I never thought of it getting rid of a headache. Thanks!

I use Sunbreeze aromatherapy essential oil for headache relief. A couple small drops on each temple and a drop behind the neck.

I am also some one who suffers from migraines. I am a hairstylist at an Aveda salon which sells an oil composition called Blue Oil. It’s main ingredient is peppermint oil. It works really well when rubbed on the temples, back of the neck, and other pressure points related to the head (such as between your thumb and first finger on your hand). Also massaging your feet can help. I like to use Foot Releif, also an Aveda product, which also contains peppermint oil. I really try to stick to natural remedies, but with migraines it can be difficult. I will have to try some of the other remedies suggested.

Yesterday I woke up with a bad headache. I tried the water several times during the day. By early afternoon I decided to try the hot shower. It did really help my neck and shoulder muscles to relax which took some of the edge off the headache. Later I tried the ice pack (which is my usual and generally works pretty well), but with as cold as it was here last night, I couldn’t keep it on for long. I was determined not to take medicine, so last night I finally fell asleep and it was gone this morning. Thank you everyone for all your tips! I still need to find out what sunbreeze oil is and where I can get it.

I get migraine headaches, but because of other health issues that I have to take medication for, I prefer to not take pills for my headaches. I appreciate some of the suggestions here and I will try them, especially the water. I’ve never heard of sunbreeze oil, but I plan on looking into it. Usually sleep is the only thing that will get rid of it, but when my headache is extreme I can’t sleep, so I use an ice pack on the back of my neck. This usually helps enough for me to get to sleep and get rid of it. Thank you to everyone who has posted such great ideas!

If you get a cool wash cloth and put it over your eyes and forehead, it helps the headache go away. Sometimes I also use my pressure points to try to get the headache out as well.

I used sunbreeze oil today. It helped a lot. Honestly I’m not even sure what all it includes…but I got it from my naturopath. I’m thinking it’s pretty natural…you rub it on your temples…and it tingles your headache away…

Water works too… as well as breathing.

I leave pills as a lost resort as well. I also try drinking water, massage (most of my headaches are tension related), and sometime the only thing that works for me is a nap. I try to listen to my body instead of dulling it with pills.

I agree. I try to drink lots of water, it almost always helps. Also sometimes taking a super hot shower helps. When it’s really bad, I use pressure points in my hands and feet. If that doesn’t work, then I go for the pills.

Every time I get a headache I always try drinking a glass of water first and waiting a couple minutes. A headache is usually a sign of dehydration and the water almost always works. I try only to take as many drugs as are necessary
