The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recently changed its mammogram guidelines. This test is crucial for early diagnosis of breast cancer, and remains so. I sm a 51 year old woman who had her first mammogram 12/24/2009. 4weeks later I had an ultrasound to check 3 “smudges”. After 3 biopsies this past Wednesday I have been diagnosed with DCIS, a very treatable breast cancer. In no way am I diminishing the importance of breast self-exams but my tumor can not be felt by self-exam. Mamograms are essential and neccessary for early detection. I never should have waited so long.

If we all remember to manage our own health care, we feel more in control. And that means we continue to thirst for the information, but we do what we know is right. If we don’t know what’s right sometimes, we ask our doctors. That way we learn. So even though the ages changed on mammogram testing, we know what’s best for us. And one size doesn’t fit all, so to speak.
