Focus on flu prevention

H1N1, or so-called “swine” flu, is on many people’s minds as we enter the winter cold and flu season. Healthcare workers are reminding us that observing good hygiene standards is important as we try to reduce our chances of contracting H1N1 — or any viral or bacterial infection. Today, challenge yourself to wash your hands frequently with soap and water or, if necessary, an alcohol-based rub; avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; minimize close contact with ill people; and try to avoid crowded places.

One thing I always have with me is my Burt’s Bees hand sanitizer. I find it perfect to use if you can’t get to a sink, without the harsh chemicals in regular hand sanitizer.

I’ve purchased travel size hand sanitizers, which can attach to the outside of any purse or backpack. Pushing shopping carts in stores, when you hand cashiers your credit/debit cards to pay for your purchases, and even when you get in your vehicle to drive, you’ll have it on hand. Most forget that nasty steering wheel and gear shift and eat while driving. Yuck!!!

I work in food so I am always washing my hands. Use lysol around your house, wash your veggies and fruits, wash your hands. It’s not that hard to do, and it keeps you healthy too.

I work in an office and even though we have a cleaning crew I still wipe my work space and telephone before I start.. Also if I shake hands with anyone I wipe my hands with hand wipes, when they leave of course..

I work in a public library so washing my hands often is very important. Every chance I get I go to the sink and wash. If I’m going to have a snack, I wash them a little bit longer.

I had the day to myself. So I cleaned my whole appartment in clorox bleach and hot water mix. Even used the allergin sprayer for the vacuum to help spray the same mix throught out the appt. Time consuming yes, but well worth it health wise.

Instead of just focusing on hands, I went throughout my apartment and sprayed Lysol disinfectant spray on all of the doorknobs, light switches, cabinet handles, faucets, and remote controls! I really should do this more often, but I just forget about it!

I understand totally! It’s just so time-consuming…but it really does help prevent sickness, especially in these winter months. :)
