"Picky" an apple

By Kashi
Challenge Yourself for: 24 Hours

Besides being delicious, apples contain a host of nutrients, including Quercetin, a flavonoid (see, it’s not only found in red wine!). So how do you choose the best one? Start by buying close to home, and stick to those that are organically grown. Next, ask yourself what you’re using it for. If it’s for eating whole, try Braeburn, Cortland, Crispin, Elstar, Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Pink Lady, or Suncrisp varieties. For cooking, stick to tarter types, like Calville Blanc, Empire, and Rome Beauty. Applesauce benefits from the juiciness of a McIntosh, Jonathan, and Lodi. Today, challenge yourself to be picky when it comes to your choice in juicy, nutritious apples.

My favorite has always been Granny Smith but I also enjoy fuji and Gala. I juice them with carrots and beets. I just love it!

My family loves apples. During the summer I go to the local orchard and get about 200-300 lbs of apples and make sugar free applesauce that my family can enjoy all winter long. Our local store is also having a sale on organic apples this week and I plan on stocking up later when I do my shopping. I just spotted the recipe below for mixing sour green apples and yams and baking them. I think I will try this tonight and see how it is.

I love my local orchard! The apples taste so good, and they even make their own apple types! Yum!
My trusty fav. is always Golden Delicious. It’s even more delicious with peanut butter!

I have recently decided to invest in organic apples; Honeycrisp and Pink Lady are my favorites. What a difference organic makes. I now know what an apple is supposed to taste like!

My wife love apples so much she uses them in various recipies and I even get to use them in homemade apple pies, apple friters, apple dupplings, and apple sause, for the deserts for after this Christmas dinner. Give it a while and I am sure my wife will think of something else I can bake for her. Loll

I love so many of the apples listed above! Granny Smith, Crispin & Empire are household favorites here! I’ve been buying the local apples from or grocer, they are much fresher! Yum! When we (hopefully) move onto our own land this spring we plan on planting several apple trees!

I just saw on the Dr.’s where apples are good for people with Asthma. It is thought that the phenolic acids and flavoinoids contained in the juice were helping to calm inflammation in the airways which is a common factor of both wheezing and asthma. So I think I will start eating an apple a day.

Apples, homemade apple sauce and apple bread are always a part of our family in the fall. We only buy local, directly from the grower whom we lovingly call “The Apple People”. No store bought apples in our family.

I love fuji and gala apples—-I chop them up to add to cole slaw and use plain yogurt mixed with Hidden Valley Ranch dry mix. Just add chopped chicken for a delicious, nutritious meal.

I add Fuji Apples (locally grown and/or organic)in our everyday diet. I cut them up like french fries to go with sandwiches…chop them into our salad, put them in whole grain pancakes, etc., They go well with everything.

HONEYCRISP APPLES ROCK!!!! Sweet, crisp and delicious!! They are only available for a short time in my area and it just happens to be mid-October to mid-November… so I’m a VERY happy girl. I also love a tart granny smith which is available year round.
