When it comes to superfoods, kid around
Are so-called superfoods as beneficial to children as they are to adults? The answer is a qualified “yes.” Everyone needs the same nutrients – namely vitamins, minerals, carbs, protein, and fat -- but kids need different amounts, depending on their age. Bone strengthening is of particular concern for all ages, as are healthy fats for brain development in younger kids. Today, challenge yourself to plan a diet for your children that includes at least some of the following “superfoods”: legumes, blueberries, spinach, and/or walnuts.

My 4 year old son is hooked on chicken nuggets and cheetos. It’s extremely hard to break him out of habit. However, I do try to make him sit at the dinner table and he is not to move until he eats what I cooked. If he gets hungry he will eat, right? Any suggestions on getting him to be healthy?

My kids have always followed our lead when it comes to veggies and fruit. We plant a vegetable garden every year, with herbs included! We also have apple trees, a peach tree and a grape vine. A fun activity for us as a family is when we run across a strange fruit or veggie in the supermarket or at the farmers market – we will always ask how its to be prepared and try it together. The kids LOVE it and we have added A LOT of new things to our diets that we love!! (We have, however, found a few things that we didn’t buy again…lol :)

Today in my kid’s lunch box they were sent a natural trail mix with whole almonds and walnuts, raisins, and dried cranberries. Then after dropping them off at school, my daughter and I went to the grocery store and just picked up a pomegranite(sp). I had tried one in the past and enjoyed it juicy, nutty flavor. A little messy peeling it but well worth it!
