When in doubt, throw it out?
Many foods are wasted because they weren’t consumed before the “use by” date stamped on the label. Challenge yourself to go through your cupboard and refrigerator today and make a list of foods that will expire in the next two weeks. Plan ahead and create menus to use up perishable foods before they go bad.

I just spent two days cleaning the heck out of my pantry to eradicate a pantry moth issue. Turns out the culprit was a Kashi granola bar. I’ve probably thrown out about $200 worth of food…and wasted countless hours cleaning. Needless to say, I’m not impressed. And given how many other people on this forum have found moths in their Kashi products, it would appear that the production sites have issues with their grain storage. I don’t think I’ll be buying any Kashi products for some time…

Yesterday, I bought a single Kashi crunchy peanut butter bar in CVS. When I opened it (just one corner), there was a dead moth. I am not sure if there are any more moths present in the package, because I haven’t examined it completely. The package was sealed and the expiration date says Nov. 5. Today is Oct. 25! Kashi claims they put “their heart and souls into developing delicious breakfasts, satisfying snacks, and mouth-watering dinners.” Should it say " mouth-watering snacks infested with moths?" This problem should be reported to a food regulatory agency.

I found moths in my box of TLC bars, too! Except mine were ALIVE. About 4-5 flew out when I opened the box. Some of individual bar packages were deflated (unsealed). When I examined one closely there was cottony fluff at one end. That must be where the moth larvae had made their home. I also bought mine from Costco and the package say it is good until June 2011 (it is October 2010 right now). Wow. Kashi needs better quality processing procedures. In the past I’ve gotten individual bars that were so salty I had to throw them out. It just shows there are real issues on the production line. I hope nobody has to get sick before they clean up their act. :-(

The exact same experience here. I thought I was the only one until I google it today. I bought two boxes from Costco this past summer when they offered coupon for the Kashi TLC bars. I started noticing moths flying around the past few weeks and finally found the culprit. I was shocked to find moths and disgusting larvae inside the just opened box (Expired March 2011). I mean lots of them. Some individual bars (about 4 or five) were deflated and soft and have tiny holes on the packaging. When I opened the second box it was the same thing. I’m contacting the Kashi Consummer Affairs Dept. (877-747-2467) tomorrow. I tried contacting them today but they closed at 7 pm EST.

I hate throwing away food! My husband is always sniffing things and asking me if he can toss food that he thinks may be off, until I rescue it from him and cook it up for lunch :) I find ways to use up almost every scrap of food we buy!

I cleaned out the cabinets AND fridge today! There was some scary old stuff in there — syrup that expired in January, 100 calorie packs that expired over the summer. I’m eating cleaner anyway, so it was easy to pitch all the expired junk!

I watch expiration dates ‘like a hawk’. Old habit from childhood. In fact I just did it today, before I joined Kashi.com. So I didn’t need to be challenged. Some bread that smelled old, even though not expired, is drying to feed to the squirrels in my backyard. Like Annaoak said, ‘that old or iffy food’ can be suspicious too. It’s better to move it out than digest it and be ill. Any grain foods can be fed to the birds and animals outside no matter where you live, country or city.

This is a great time to clean out the fridge and pantry. Get rid of that old or iffy food before the holidays and have peace of mind that no one will get sick from old food.

yes, my household plans its meals very well with the expiration dates in mind already
