Bring a bucket to shower

Challenge Yourself for: 24 Hours

How much cold water is wasted while you wait for your shower to warm up? Up to five gallons, according to some sources. That’s plenty to water plants or gardens with—and it’s soap-free! Today, challenge yourself to bring a bucket into your bathroom and start saving your not-so-gray pre-shower water for plant hydration.

Our master bathroom is on the opposite end of our house from the garage, where the water heater is located. We keep a three gallon bucket in the bathtub and fill it everytime we get ready to shower. We use the water for houseplants and plants outside, as well as in our pool when the water level starts to get low.

I have been doing this for years. We are always in a drought during the summer but I still have beautiful plants.

My washing machine is located in my bathroom. I transferred the clothes to a laundry basket and poured the bucket of water into it. Next time I do laundry, it won’t take as long, or as much water, to fill! Good idea! Anyone know if you can change the challenges to be more than 24 hour? Or do you have to commit to them every day?

I hate pulling out the hose to water my flowers. I have to admit that I’ve actually had some plants wither away to nothing for lack of desire to pull it out. This is a great way to kill two birds with one stone, keep my plants alive and conserve a little water. Love it!

You could also use that water to flush the toilet.

What a great idea. My husband fills a big bucket in our tub every morning. I will retrain him to fill it up before he showers.

I actually do this. At first I thought it was a little strange, but it is not as big a deal as I thought. When I start the shower, I put the bucket directly into the spray until the water is hot, then I make any adjustements, slide the bucket to the back and shower like normal. I am amazed at how quickly the buket will fill up. I use the water for my plants.

I like and need this challenge. It is amazing how much water I go through in a day. Because of daily workouts, I shower twice a day most days. Not only can the collected water be used for my plants / flowers, I can fill my big, tail-wagging best friend’s water bowl with it too. I’m off to get my bucket….
