Weed in, not out

Challenge Yourself for: 24 Hours

Surprise: Not only are many plants widely regarded as “weeds” edible, but they could have higher vitamin and mineral content than conventional grocery store fare. The challenge in sampling wild flora lies in avoiding pesticides and poisonous varieties. Today, challenge yourself to find out what grows naturally in your area. Some edible plants to look for: lambsquarters, purslane, mallow, miner’s lettuce, dandelions, and nasturtiums. Note: Be sure to validate the plant’s safety with a reputable source prior to sampling.

I love this. We live in Missouri and there are soo many edible plants here it seems we are always discovering more. We have done a lot this past year with Dandelions, we also have found wild carrots, onions, chives, and made some creative salads!

Every time we venture into the woods we bring our copy of Euwell Gibbons book on Stalking the Good life. This week we are enjoying home made cedar tea. Many of our flowers in our yard are native flowers from our area that we just happen to appreciate! :)

Dandelion wine sure is fine!and awfully inexpensive too. I enjoy discovering the flora and fauna wherever I am but especially where I live. The internet makes finding out about edibles so much easier!

I know dandelions, but don’t recognize the other weeds. Where do I go to find out
what they look like. I have been adding dandelions to my greens when I cook swiss
chard and mustard greens(which I grow in my back yard) for some time. But never
being raised in the country, I don’t recognize the other weeds.
