Clear some space to think

By Kashi
Challenge Yourself for: 24 Hours

Constantly surrounded by stimulation—cell phones, email, Internet, and TV—our hectic lives can leave little time for reflection. To enjoy life and live it to the fullest, we really need some quiet time to tackle unresolved issues and recharge both mentally and emotionally. Today, challenge yourself to put aside some time for not “doing” anything. Take a walk, throw rocks into the ocean or a lake, turn off all distractions and sit quietly in a private room, or schedule a private weekend away. Whatever you decide, commit to putting aside quiet time to listen to your inner voice, let go of old patterns, and embrace new choices.

I take walks with my dog Gracie at 5am.It is quiet,no traffic,no people.Gracie has a chance to sniff at all the trees and bushes and I have the chance to think and plan my day ahead.

I took a nice bike ride yesterday and just enjoyed my surrounding, took some photographs, and had a good time. I also took a walk today just talking with some friends along the way. And then before starting some work I had I sat in the grass on a towel, just quietly, and observed everything.
It was all quite lovely :)

It’s difficult for me to take time for myself staying home with my 17 month old son. Seems like when he’s napping, I’m always getting housework done, or logging onto the computer to keep in touch with the outside world.. lol. I feel healthiest in mind, body, and spirit when I’m out in nature- whether I’m gardening, or just taking a walk. So happy spring is here! I feel like I’m waking up, and I’m ready to do some re-energizing and re-centering. I know that I need to do this for myself. It’s going to be difficult, but I’m up for the challenge!

I went for a run today…it was a beautiful spring day and rather than plug in the ipod I just enjoyed the surroundings.

When I was younger (I’m now 71 yrs old) and in the midst of the corporate rat race, I found the best vacations for me were what I called “White Wall Time.” This consisted of being absolutely alone, put the cats and dogs outside, unplug the phone, TV, and stereo; turn off my pager (this was before cell phones), lock all the doors, close all the windows to keep out extraneous noise, turn off the lights, sit in my most comfortable chair with plenty of water or ice tea within easy reach, then just sit and stare at a white wall for the entire week. These were the longest, most relaxing, cheapest vacations I ever took. They cleared the mind, relaxed the body, and rejuvenated my “spirit”. It’s like soaking in a psychic hot tub. I need to re-engage this wonderful process.

I’ve been successful lately at finding time to just sit and think. No cell phone service at home, and caller ID on our land line – I don’t even answer the phone when I’m taking time for myself. I must admit, though, I didn’t figure this out until I reached my fifties. Now at 62 and counting, I routinely take time for myself at least one day a week to do artwork or sit and read.

It’s refreshing to hear nothing but your own thoughts, and see nothing but your own surroundings for a day. Wish I had the commitment to do this regularly.
