Recession-proof your diet
Count it as yet another unfortunate byproduct of recession: During lean economic times, people tend to eat cheaper, less healthful food. That shift in habits can add up – to poor health. Today, challenge yourself to monitor your diet for “recession-creep.” Some tips for riding out the recession with your eating standards somewhat intact: • Buy in bulk • Join a natural-foods cooperative • Dine in • Rely on beans and legumes for protein instead of expensive cuts of meat

This is grocery day: So far, so good. This is a tuffy, but some good basic foods are still cheap. What seems to make food more expensive for me is convenience. Time is limited on a daily basis. The solution all comes down to planning (for the week). Example: Get the whole grain brown rice, or Kashi and cook up a big batch on sunday, so it’s there during the rest of the week.

coupons are crucial, but even more helpful for us has been planning atleast the meat portions of meals, around sales, cutting and freezing the bulk portions for many meals. I’m getting better at planning the routes to the various grocery stores to maximize the sales in one trip, and always stick to my list!

I dine in every meal, we grow most of our own veggies and freeze them instead of canning, and our relatives and neighbors give us any extras from their gardens. We also buy in bulk the things we can, and reuse any containers we have lying around such as our yogurt and milk jugs to start our seeds in before planting them in the ground.

I exercise three times a week at a Boot Camp Program. I spent many years in front of a computer screen; I had to do something! Because it is such intensive exercise I started going once a week to see if I could really do it. Boot Camp has proven to be a great way to get back in shape and also to meet people who have the same goals. The coach is excellent and encouraging.

I visit the Farmer’s market when I get a chance and have quit using canned veggies and fruits.
