Ask yourself if you need this food
Before you buy, look yourself in the eye: Do you really need this food? There are many reasons we buy things we don’t need: it looks good, your friend buys it, you’re shopping hungry, or you wish it was something you liked. The next time you go shopping, bypass all that denial and challenge yourself to look at each item more critically. Be more honest about what you really need.

In addition to reading labels and comparing items—I’ve tried to add some new healthy choices to replace the not so healthy. Making sensible choices and moderation for all eating seems to be the key…

I’m doing great! I got a book from my Endocrinologist that teaches me how many carbs, fat, and protein is in certain foods. I’m asking myself, “Is this food good for me and do I really need this food?” It works. The book is called ‘Calorie King 2009 Edition’. It can be obtained at Borders or Barnes & Noble.

I don’t like to cook, so it’s sometimes a challenge to avoid the prepared foods that are high in sodium, fat and calories. I recently tried a Kashi frozen dinner that was delicious as well as healthy. I know healthy alternatives are available so I need to continue to challenge myself

It really helps me to ask this – helps me to focus not only on what I am about to eat but also on what i need to be healthy.

I need to make sure I am not hungry when I shop for food. It really does affect what I buy.

i always shop the vegetarian way. its my lifestyle.

I went grocery shopping and I thought about buying cereal and snacks that weren’t natural for my natural lifestyle. Granted, the cereal I wanted could have been healthy from the standpoint of calories and fat, but it had sugars and ingredients that wouldn’t have been healthy for me. That is why I chose the healthier alternative and it tastes just as great!

I try to always shop the outer edges of the grocery store and eat as fresh as possible. We eat very little pasta and mostly whole grains. When we do have pasta I made it myself (easier than it looks)and we have done pretty well. Also to fight temptation in the grocery store for something already processed and laden with chemicals and sugars, I plan out 2 desserts a week to make it easier to satisfy the sweet tooth without going overboard. Last week ruby star grapefruits were on sale and fresh strawberries from the local fields. I made a granita with the grapefruit juice and fresh cane juice, sliced strawberries and fresh mint. This week blueberrys were on sale, so I made a fresh lemon curd and plan on spreading that on toasted angel food cake and topping it with blueberry compote, YUMMM. It helps me stay on track to get the weekly flyers, come up with a menu and stick to it using fresh items that are on sale.

Reading the ingredients does help to make a decision between brands and also to determine whether I should leave it on the shelf

This is such a good thing to get into the habit of. But it’s so difficult at times. I usually look at the ingredients if I don’t know what it is. Even with a coupon, if a product is not healthy, it’s not really a good deal. Maybe good for the pocket, but long-term, it might mean more visits to the doctor.
