I found that there are many ways in which we can all lead both healthy lives and healthy hearts. A few ways in which we can help our hearts are:

Take the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator at school or the mall. Just start with one flight. Soon, you’ll be ready for two.

Park your car at the far end of the parking lot. The short walk to and from the store or school helps your heart.

If you ride a bus or subway, get off a stop before your destination. Walk the rest of the way.

If you can, spend a few minutes of your lunch break taking a stroll around the campus grounds.

It should help you stay awake after lunch.

Think of housework as an extra chance to exercise. Vacuuming briskly can be a real workout.
Mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, and raking leaves are chores that can be done yourself as a chance to exercise.

If you have a dog, think of the dog as an exercise machine with fur. A brisk walk with the dog is good for both of your hearts. Make it a part of your daily routine.

If you have a family, schedule an after-dinner walk. Make it quality time.

Hey Jeremy,
I am now into this new sport called “Trikking” and oh what a rush I get! It has steered me in the direction of eating more healthy, especially Kashi bars. I ride about 30 miles a day and keep 4 boxes of Kashi bars in my pack for energy along with my Gatorade. I have been on tv a few times in the local news as the guy who rides his Trikke more, rather than the bus. I’m all over NJ, and if you blink, you may miss me! Search for TrikkeDaddy on Youtube and you will see me! Take care and keep up the motivation.

Ever since high school I have been looking for an activity to fill the void of team sports. I have always viewed exercise as a side benefit of playing a game with my team but now that I am trying to maintain my health and keep in shape I have taken up running. I have recently moved to a new area and to get my barrings I have started running every night in a different part of town and it’s never boring, and when I get lost and have to run farther I don’t feel bad about it afterwards!

I use to use my treadmill everyday, but I got bored with it, I use to walk in different parks all the time, but I got bored with that, and now I’m walking malls for hours, but I’m getting bored that too. How can I spice things up so I don’t get sick of doing the same thing day after day?

What is the best way to start a regular fitness program? I exercise from time to time, but nothing very consistently. Also, what are some good starting fitness goals to set?

I’d love to help out and answer a few of your questions above. Since I’m not a fitness expert, I think the best thing for me to do is to point you in the direction of a few links.

wendyjoubert: This article is all about “10 Tricks for Sticking With [an Exercise Routine]”
http://www.ideafit.com/articles/ten_tricks.asp

vw08: This link is all about “5 Steps to Get Started” on a fitness routine sthttp://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fitness/HQ00171

anafairy: For the most part, losing weight has a lot to do with how many calories you eat every day and how much activity you do to burn off those calories. One of the best strategies that has worked for me when I’ve been in your situation is to track everything I’m eating. This website (http://www.thedailyplate.com/) is great because it gives you the tools to do this. (And you can track your daily activities too.)

mikeandamanda18: From my own personal experience (and asking a few fitness buffs I know), it’s pretty reasonable to expect to see some results after about 3 months of training regularly. That means about 4-5 times per week (for approximately 30 minutes or more) using proper technique.

After 6 months, you should really feel and see the results. Patience, dedication, and focusing on how great exercise makes you feel (rather than how you look) are some of the best ways to ensure your long-term success.

i live right next to the beach and i found that walking in sand will get your heart rate up almost twice as quickly as walking alone. and it is also good for our dogs. so doggies and i shall spend much more time on the beach!!
