Challenge Yourself for: 24 Hours

Make stocking stuffers tasty Small packages of natural and locally grown gourmet foods make great stocking stuffers and miniature gifts. Today, challenge yourself to think outside the standard gift box and put these natural goodies on your gift list. Some ideal items include: honey, syrup, jam, coffee, tea, chocolate, herbs, and spices. Find them at natural and gourmet stores. Teaching kids to cook or grow their own food empowers them to be healthy eaters. Herb garden kits, child-size utensils, kids’ cookbooks, smoothie/popsicle-makers, and cooking classes are just a few ways to get kids acquainted with natural foods. Today, challenge yourself to make a list of the kids in your life and identify some nutrition-related gifts for them.

My 9Y daughter likes to cook and I am the baker of the family. We have started incorporating whole grain flours into our bread and cookie baking projects. The taste is wonderful and the added nutritional value is beyond compare.

When young, my son went through the typical macaroni and cheese only phase, but participated in helping Mom and Dad with meal preparation. Now 20 and in college, he prides himself on the gourmet meals he fixes. No frozen pizzas stock his freezer. The crisper is full of veggies, he experiments with seafood dishes and excels in pasta creations. He surprised us during winter break with a recipe of his own design, strip steaks with leeks and mushrooms in a reduced balsamic/merlot sauce with gorgonzola. Chipoltle mashed potatoes and salad rounded out the meal, a stunning success. We are so proud of Andy, he is our joy in every way.

My son loves to watch me cook and loves to help. I think he is a natural in the kitchen, I just hope it sticks with him through the years.
