Start a composting bin

Submitted by SiteEditor Read more daily challenge, eco-friendly, gardening, and recycling
Challenge Yourself for: 90 days

Whether you use plant clippings or last night’s dinner, compost is very easy to make. Essentially, compost is made up of anything that was once living. If you’re a gardener, it’s a great additive to soil. It’s also beneficial for minimizing waste and your environmental footprint.

During the next three months, create your own composting bin. Challenge yourself to avoid making excuses, like you’re a city dweller or you’re not a gardener. (It’s easy to find someone to donate your compost to!).

(We’ve given you 90 days for this challenge. When you log your progress, you only need to log as many days as you think are applicable.)

I started a compsot bin about 3 weeks ago but I have to get a real bin for it to work well. Looking forward to getting one (hopefully) this weekend.

We have been adding kitchen refuse to the pile most of the last year. Now have a large pile that is growing a melon vine and a fern that I thought was dead.

My Husband is an Organic Farmer and for a few years now we’ve had our compose heap in our back yard. Please remeber to toss it over ocassionally.

I cannot find a bin anywhere! We have looked at everyplace local we could think of but no luck – we found some on line but the shipping costs are outrageous!!! Any suggestions?

shaniam – One of my co-workers bought a bin at a more specialized gardening store (not sure where you live, but it was purchased at Armstrong Garden Center in southern CA). I’ve also found that you can sometimes find shipping deals on some composting bin site. The other option, which may take a little more time – you could search online and find instructions for building one yourself.

I just started a worm bin myself! It’s actually kind of exciting to see everything progressing. The other great side effect of composting is that I’m much more conscious of everything I throw in the trash and it seems like I’ve been creating much less trash overall.

Composting is the best thing ever!! I love checking on my worms and talking to them about the fun they are having eating my good leftovers!

This is way better then recycling your paper, you can actually feed it to the worms!

shaniam—try with your municipal trash collection, if applicable. In Phoenix, they recycle old trash containers and charge a small fee…but the bottom is cut out and vent holes are added…with a top!

I’m with you Nikki I want to start one so bad but am clueless about where to start and what to do. I did see a bin I wanted on the Earth Chanel it looked like a giant yoga ball. It was so cool you can roll it around to mix it and you just roll it to where you need when it’s time to us it. I heard form a friend that they cost a lot of money. But I do a lot of vegitable and herb gardening in the spring and summer so it would be worth it for me to learn.
