I’ve been doing this for years too; and occasionally run a lemon peel down the garbage disposal that I don’t use otherwise. Also following it with a large pan of boiling water. It keeps the kitchen smelling nice too. Oh, spray your garbage cans with amonia to keep animals away so they don’t ingest anything harmful to them.

Not only does this work, it’s fun to watch the fizzy reaction when the vinegar hits the baking soda!

As a preventative once in a while, and when we have a clog, we use hydrogen peroxide down the drains. For a bad clog it can actually take up to 10 nights of doing one full bottle last thing at night, so maybe the baking soda/vinegar thing is better and cheaper, but the peroxide really does work. We always watch for drug store sales on the peroxide to stock up.

2 oz Vinegar with 22 oz water in a squirt bottle and you have our own general cleaner. I use it on counter tops, mirrors, and glass.

Let the mixture set for a while (as long as possible), and then pour hot water down the drain.
