Sterols, plant-based nutrients, can help the body fight absorption of “bad” cholesterol. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends foods fortified with plant sterols for folks with LDL cholesterol levels over 160. Where can you find them? Yogurt drinks and orange juice to start (e.g., two 8-oz glasses of fortified OJ per day). If you’re managing high cholesterol, this month challenge yourself to add sterol-rich low-fat foods to your daily regimen.
