Demystify vitamin D
Vitamin D is vital for healthy bones and teeth. Also known as calciferol, it is found in animal foods and also converted in our bodies from UV rays. Some claim that vitamin D is not a “real” vitamin at all, because it has to be metabolically activated before it can be made biologically active. Whatever its mysteries, humans need it to survive. Today, challenge yourself to get your daily serving of vitamin D by drinking some fortified milk, cheese or yogurt, or spending a few minutes in the sun.

Every morning before I’m off to college campus, I have a bowl of Kashi Flakes with blueberry clusters and a glass of 1% milk. I spend 5 hours on campus and about 20-30 minutes in the afternoon sun. I also eat a snack of skim milk cheese on a whole grain tortilla (warmed).

Since I do a lot of yardwork every day the sun shines here in Ct., I spend a lot of time outdoors. I have also tried to walk around my neighborhood each morning for about 20 to 30 minutes or longer if I feel up to it. This in itself is a challenge for me as I have very bad circulation in my legs. By the way…love Kasha cereals and have recently found the hot cereal which is becoming my favorite. As winter approaches, I’ll probably take a Vit D supplement along with my calcium supplement.

I’ve been taking Vitamin-D supliments for a couple of months along with extra calicum because I’m getting older and want to protect my bones. I also try to walk for 30 or 40 minutes out-of-doors at least three times a week.
