Grow an organic garden

Submitted by SiteEditor Read more 30 day challenge, daily challenge, eco-friendly, gardening, and home life
Challenge Yourself for: 30 days

Seeds and starter plants raised without pesticides and herbicides make sense if you’re going organic. And they’re readily available at garden supply centers. This spring, if you’re planning on gardening, challenge yourself to learn about organic options and use them instead of conventional ones.

(We’ve given you 30 days for this challenge. When you log your progress, you only need to log as many days as are applicable.)

Just planted more shallots this morning. The previous shallots and strawberries are coming along nicely. Already harvesting yellow squash and salad greens. Cucumbers and tomatoes should be ready soon.

There is nothing better than eating vegetables that you have grown yourself. Today I ate a wonderful salad with mixed lettuces, Swiss chard and spinach as well as green onions I grew myself. It was wonderful. I am looking forward to the sugar snaps peas. All of these are so easy to grow and require very little from you. All the peas have had since they were planted is some water. Same for the onions (from rain). And I mixed homemade compost into the soil where I planted the lettuce, Swiss chard and spinach. So easy and so delicious.

I have been growing orchids, herbs and fragrant trees and plants organically for many years. I have also composted since 1999 and my plants reward me with lovely blooms.

The weather has been perfect here in North Texas. My flower bed is doing great. A friend gave me a patio tomato tree which he started from seed. It is taking off. Hope to have fresh organic tomatoes to enjoy soon.

My tomato and pepper plants were started from organic seeds in mid January. They are now ready to go into the ground. The rows are prepared and fertilized with organic products. As soon as the forcasted storms are over they go into the ground. I usually raise about 22 to 25 varieties of tomatoes but have cut back to 15 this year.
    Wish me luck.
I would like to say thanks to the farmers out there, I would probably starve if I had to depend on what comes through for me. Thanks to you all.

If you were truly sustainable you would not use milk products in virtually every product you sell. Milk (and meat) means a large cow population (it is currently 56 billion), a large cow population means alot of methane released into the atmosphere. Methane is 23 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas. On all of the granola bars it is the second last ingredient, is this really necessary? Until it is removed, a large group of students at my school and I refuse to support your “sustainable” practices.

Wow…this one was hard because the weather just didn’t want to work with us. Most of the tomatoes and bell peppers are gone :( Our lettuce and herbs are doing great though…most of them that is. We even got some strawberries going!

    Hopefully the rest comes through…hopefully.

My dad has grown a garden ever since I was little, but this year I really decided I was going to help him with everything from planting to daily maintence. We have tomatoes, cucumber, lots of brocolli and peppers that should be ready in about 2 months. Like my dad said, as long as I help weed, I can feed!

I planted my garden two weeks ago and it is really growing! It is my first garden and it organic so far. I have a table with 4 pots that I planted looseleaf lettuce, green onions, purple basil and chives. Then I have a strip of land by the fence that has beans, japanese eggplant, cucumber, zucchini, squash, bell pepper, jalepeno and tomato. I’m so excited to eat my own veggies later this summer!

I am finished planting finally. Luckily, everything made it through a last frost we had earlier this week. Frost is usually over by now. We are going to start new compost bins this weekend.

I just planted my garden today after trying to get the new ground turned all weekend. It is about 60×30. All I need to finish the planting are onions, potatoes, green beans, and corn.
Try planting in beds instead of rows in your garden, especially in small gardens. You can fit a surprising amount of plants into a small area and the vegetables provide the ground cover instead of having to mulch. You use less materials so you can buy more plants that will pay off in the end. The plants seem to do better because they don’t loose as much water to evaporation and companion planting really does make a difference in the production capacity of the plants.

actually started my garden this year on the 25th. So far: Prrplr Cherokee tomatoes, Mr Stripey tomatoes, Kahlrabi and summer squash. The garden is 8×8 so can’t fir much more in there. But I do also have some plants on my apartment’s porch.
