Be good to your heart

Challenge Yourself for: 30 days

February is American Heart Month. And since Kashi is a big proponent of keeping your heart healthy, we thought we’d highlight it by posting a challenge. This month, make an effort to pay attention to these aspects of heart health: • Diet • Fitness • Weight management • Cholesterol • High blood pressure What does this mean for you? Well for starters, get your cholesterol and blood pressure checked. If you discover that they’re too high, make a plan for reducing them by integrating more positive diet and exercise choices into your lifestyle. Whatever steps you decide to take, challenge yourself this month to make a long-term plan for positive heart healthy living. And to make it more meaningful, share what you’ve learned — and what you’re doing — with everyone here. _(For more tips on heart healthy living, visit the American Heart Association.)_

Had my cholesterol and blood pressure checked for the first time. I’m doing alright, which is great, and it’s good to have a baseline for future reference. I walk to the train in the morning for work, which is a great way to keep my heart and other muscles strong!

With heart disease being a huge risk factor in my family’s history, I’m striving to keep my genetics in check by exercising and eating right…more to come.

Currently, I weigh more than I want to, but my BP is below hypertensive and my cholesterol could be a bit better. It isn’t bad. My HDL needs to be a bit higher, and my LDL is low. Now, just work on the weight. Women’s cardiac health is very important to me. I know it’s the #1 killer of women in the USA. Women need to be proactive in knowing their signs and symptoms are of a heart attack!

This is the best challenge ever, given that heart disease is the leading killer of American women and men.
