Follow the 90-10 rule
During the holidays it’s fun to celebrate, attend parties, visit loved ones…and sample lots of delicious foods. And even though food is just a small part of what the holidays are all about, you might feel left out if you don’t indulge in some decadent holiday treats. That’s what’s so great about the 90-10 rule.
Whenever you attend a party or are offered holiday goodies, challenge yourself to follow this rule: Eat right 90% of the time and give yourself permission to indulge the other 10%. This way, you can truly savor all the pleasures of the holiday season while maintaining a healthy perspective on eating.

protien first, veg next, light on anything after that.
Great idea! Such simple logic to give you peace of mind during the holidays!
great rule…it helps to know I can actually indulge in something not so great and don’t have to feel bad about it…
This is a great rule. I think the challenge will be easy to follow. Kashi is a wonderful, healthy snack!
Kashi is so wonderful, it is important that something you eat that tastes fantastic also is good for you.YOOHOO
The wonderful thing about my family is we all hve the same goals toward health, which leads of course to happiness. We pace ourselves while having the Thanksgiving Meal. We talk, laugh and make new memories to tell next year. We all participate in the clean up. It was well below 0 so walking outside was not something anyone wanted to do, including me! Hard to hop and scoot on ice. We did not indulge in anything other than veggies and gluten free, sugar free snacks. Everyone tries to come up with some new recipe every year. Tht is our challenge for the one that draws the short straw for next year. So far, Octapus is a no go. LOL
sounds great, just hope I can do it, willpower is tough but kashi is great!
Just because something you love is really bad for you doesn’t mean you can’t at least taste it. Take the smallest piece or just take a bite or two. It will satisfy your craving and only put the smallest dent in your calorie intake.
no problem—-completely doable
wishing you all success this Thanksgiving Holiday weekend
It is doable.
It’s challenging but you got to be dedicated & loyal conscious!
Since the holidays are swing I got an idea for dark chocolate instead of the boxed chocolate that I crave I am so determined not to go crazy this Christmas.
If you gotta have chocolate, dark choco’s the way to go. The key is moderation. If you want something, have a small amount of it, then move on to something else, or drink some water, take a walk, anything to get you away from the “bad” stuff.
I am a carbaholic! The holidays are a time where I typically consume way too many carbs and end up gaining weight! This season I am eating salads a lot more – like at lunch time instead of a sandwich. Also I am limiting the amount/kind of bread I eat. Tonight when we ate spagghetti, I only ate one piece of Italian bread, with 0 calorie – spray butter on it. Plus, the spagghetti was whole wheat spagghetti.
I get what your saying carbs are my weakness but I can’t get into whole wheat spaghetti it is not the same!
I found that I couldn’t tolerate whole wheat spaghetti, and a friend of mine introduced me to brown rice spaghetti…much better, and I don’t have that full, “put me to bed” feeling afterward. It’s made by a company called Tinkyada: http://www.tinkyada.com/ You can find it at any health food store and in the healthfood section of many grocery chains now. I throw in lots of steamed broccoli with it along with a salmon patty from Costco.
As a fellow carboholic, I totally feel what you’re saying! This year, I’m doing a bit better, pacing my sweets consumption (it’s gonna be there later, so no need to skarf it down all in one sitting!) One thing that helps me is I use salad (lettuce greens or spinach) as a base for other stuff, like chili or saucy foods, and make smaller portions. This way I get my greens and my carby goodies all at once.
the easy way i found was to eat my favorite things that are helathy for me and eat enough that you are full and then a little later when you want that sweet snack you don’t feel bad at all.
I try to fill up on lots of fresh veggies from trays and choose whole-grain crackers for the cheeseball or dip. I still have a weakness for chocolate, though!
