Know your portions

By Kashi Read more daily challenge, healthy eating, and mindful eating
Challenge Yourself for: 24 Hours

When we’re hungry, our eyes are often bigger than our bellies and we tend to overeat. That’s why it’s so important to know what healthy-sized portions are for our favorite foods...and to savor those portions slowly. In fact, portion control is one important factor in staying trim.

Today, learn about your how much you’re eating at a typical meal by getting out your measuring cups and spoons each time you eat. For example, during breakfast pour your cereal into a bowl like you usually do. Then use measuring cups to pour a second bowl, following the serving size on the package’s Nutrition Facts Panel. This way, the next time you eat cereal you’ll know what an actual serving size looks like in your bowl.

Challenge yourself today to measure the portions of all your meals.

I only own desert plates and my rule of thumb is my meal must fit on the plate and don’t eat anymore. (I eat five small meals a day, eating every three hours) Each meal includes a protein, a complex carb, and a slice of fruit.

I been doing portion control for over a year now. watching my calories and have lost 80 pounds, it does get a little easier but it’s still something I slip up on now and then too.

I’m amazed at how much I overeat! With cereal, I usually eat like 2.5 cups instead of one! I’m trying to replace that second (and a half) cup with toast or fruit. Also, scottishlass…I do what you’re doing…bigger breakfast means eating less throughout the day!

I start with a healthy breakfast including kashi oatmeal or kashi cereal one piece of whole wheat toast and a glass of orange juice. Then i just eat smaller portions for lunch and dinner and for a late night snack a kashi cookie or piece of fruit.

I joined Weight Watchers the Monday before Thanksgiving…(Crazy, I know!) and they are excellent about helping you manage portions and tracking how much you eat. It really is the secret to weight loss and healthy eating habits! I’ve lost 10 pounds over the holidays just by watching my portions.
