Calculate your carbon footprint
While it’s practically impossible to eliminate your impact on the environment, you can minimize your carbon footprint. The first step is figuring out how much carbon your lifestyle generates.
Today, find a carbon calculator online and fill-out the questionnaire to identify exactly how much of a negative impact your lifestyle has on the planet. You’ll notice that some carbon calculators are specific for just one emission source like car travel, while others allow you to calculate the emissions from more than one source. You might want to find several different calculators to get a more comprehensive picture.
I found a couple really great calculators.
This one’s from An Inconvenient Truth:

The Nature Conservancy has this one:

Here’s one from the Environmental Protection Agency:

an inconvenient truth has my family at ‘smaller than agerage’ at 6.25
the nature coservancy has my family at ‘Your estimated greenhouse gas emissions are 41 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent per year, which is below the national average in the US.’
the epa has my famiyl at total emissons at 18,165
I guess my family is doing well.
I found my family to rate lower than the national average but with a bit of awareness and effort I think we can get this number lower. I’m going to invite some friends to take the challenge. We can help change the world-one household at a time!
Wow!! GO ME!! I am below the national average..and I am not really even trying..I need to make a bigger effort to get way down!!!
Looks like I’m average. However, there is a link to help offset, so I’m going to look into that.
wow i had no idea that my household produced that much co2 39 according to nature conversacy but i am below national average
I wish I could carpool to work, but no one else I know goes where I’m going :(. I still like to recycle and unplug appliances when not in use—we also keep our heat down. I will try to walk more around town than I do now!
Oh no I am “well above average” on the inconvenient truth site. I have a feeling it is due to all the business traveling I do.
We changed all our lightbulbs to CFLs, installed a low flow shower head and when our furnace died, we bought a 15 seer heat pump. – between all of those we have noticed a big difference in our bills.
