Reuse your coffee grounds
If filtered coffee is part of your daily ritual, don’t throw away those precious grounds just yet. Coffee grounds have myriad uses, from enriching worm farms, fertilizer, and compost to serving as natural odor eaters (when dried and stuffed in old stockings). Some people even use them to scour greasy pans! Today, challenge yourself to research creative ways to use those grounds. More tips:
- Sprinkle them in ant-infested areas.
- Soak them in water overnight and use the darkened liquid as a natural wood stain.
- Rub them in your hands to eliminate strong odors from fish, garlic, or onion.

Bc it gave me a natural way to rid some of my unoccupied rooms from their musty/old smell.
There are a lot of ants where I live. If I sprinkle them in the ant areas, I’m also fertilizing the ground in those areas…2 for 1. :)
I use the grinds with potting soil
Good info that I was not aware of
my grandmother told me this also teabags are good for rosebushes
I am stoked I found this website! The information on the coffee grounds are priceless and all the advice and tips from everyone = totally awesome. I was given a Kashi bar one day and didn’t know it would lead to a world of natural great health. Happy camper :)
this is a great idea and one that I have already been doing for a few years
I already put them in my garden. They make my plants grow bigger.
Practical.
Just don’t put them down the disposal.
Love to stay true to nature!!;)
Never throw away banana peels. They are bio degrade able for plants indoors and out. Banana peels will only turn black and not get moldy. Cut into little squares and put around any plant as a fertilizer. Do this if u aren’t composting.
Love this tip! I have never heard about any of this. I espically like adding it to the garden and using as a stain. I have a Cub Scout PAck and we will try both of these. Something else that works for getting odors off of hands (onion, garlic) is poring some table salt on your damp hands and rub together ans rince, works everytime! I do not have a problem with it drying my hands out either! ~
Thanks for the salt tip!
i have thrown it in my garden for years…thanks
Recycling rocks!
I did like it don’t know why it comes up that I didnt
I add a little less water and reperk the next day
The tip for eliminating strong odor worked! :)
After cutting up some garlic for my mushroom omelet, I had washed my hands but still had a garlic smell to them I then rubbed my hands in my leftover grounds and it worked like a charm! Thanks for the tip :)
I’d rather reuse than throw anything away….
Thanks! you helped me kill the ants in my garden !!!
Love this website! Thanks for all of the great ideas.
Put the grounds on houseplants, flowers in yard, rosebushes, and other kinds of plants. I repost this to be able to log as my post.
Put the grounds on houseplants, flowers in yard, rosebushes, and other kinds of plants.
I have heard to use grounds for ants, and I do, but really have no clue what it is supposed to do. I just know that I have a serious any problem in my yard. Both neighbors use pesticides in their yard. I do not use any pesticides, so the ants naturally come to my yard. I know ants are good, and I welcome all wildlife to my yard, but it’s getting quite dicey to work in my garden now because there are SO many ant farms…and many different kinds of ants…from tiny red ants to giant red ants. Sigh…
HAve you heard of YoungLiving they have essential oils which can help with insects wonder if they help with ants check it out youngliving.com or also Melelucca .com may have something too. let me know if they can help waterman@tds.net have a great week Linda
awesome info thanks

I’m grateful for this wesite and everyone who put their time into all the info on it,the Kashi Team, the Kashi products and of course my family. Love Ya’ll :) thanks!!
Ive always saved my coffee grounds to mix with fine egg shells for plants as well as use in my garden. Its great for the plants!
saves money and less in the garbage bag!
WOW! Didn’t know any of the stuff about reusing ground coffee. THANKS!
Yes, and ground eggshells mixed in are terrific. Especially great for acidic plants like hydrangeas and holly and evergreens. We even put them on our knockout roses. Ground up eggshells are a bonus.
Just be aware if you use it as a natural wood stain, it is not waterproof :).
I knew about putting them in compost but never knew the other uses for coffee grounds. I will utilize these suggestions and pass them on.
me too thanks.
i love fun crafty and recycle ideas!! thank you for finding things i can incorporate into my day
I used coffee grounds to feed my tortoise.
I use the tea from my tea bags to put on my acid loving plants and to help keep the soil moist like a mulch. During summer all that iced tea produced lots of tea bags. I put the whole bag around the base of the plants and formed a little layer of insulation.
This is fucked
Wonderful suggestions! I’m going to make a note of them and make use of my coffee grounds when the need arises.
I like the idea of the natural wood stain, who would have known?
I like that there is a natural wood stain from something that is very easily bought by all incomes.
I have a neighbor who swears adding unused brewed coffee (No sugar, etc.) to her flower bed and used coffee grounds to the soil makes her roses pop.
I have used coffee grounds around our roses.
I sprinkle coffee grounds in my garden every year. You can get free fresh grounds at Starbucks just for asking and I also save my own. Acid loving plants love them so I sprinkle them on my azaleas, too.
And also I would like to know if the coffee grounds help to promote the growth of the grass in the empty spots in Florida ( where I currently reside)?
Never thought ofthe coffee grounds can do is to repel ants out of the lanscaping around the house. I will definitely sprinkle mine upon mischievous ants today. Hope it works , if it do.. will share with others then. Thank you for the great advices about the coffee grounds. Reuse it than pitch it out to the landfill. Save our precious earth, God’s creation. :)
thanks for the info… will be doing a whole lot more with my coffee grounds for now on.
Just another way to cut down on waste and find more organic alternatives for everyday use
they are really good to sprinkle around acid loving plants like azaleas & hollies and then water into the soil
It’s nice to find useful information like uses for used coffee grounds!
I have problem with street cats littering all over my flower garden then digging out the wood chip or mulch on the cement. The garden smells awful. My coworker then told me to put coffee grounds or orange/citrus peels on my garden keep out street cats from littering all over. Is that true?
Such a good exfoliant!
I use my coffee grounds to make an excellent body scrub. Mix with a little coconut oil and scrub scrub scrub! Leaves skin feeling fresh :)
hey
I had no idea there were so many uses beyond basic composting. Thank you for sharing.
I am so glad to know they repel ants. I went out and dumped them in the ant-spots of the yard straight away.
I have been doing this for some time….i believe everything on this earth can be reused for a purpose….
Our plants’ soil is in need of nutrients, so I saved today’s coffee grounds for them.
You can also use them as a facial scrub to slough off skin cells and tighten skin.
Messy, though.
Coffee Grounds that have been used can be rubbed on your thighs to tighten up your skin. Very productive against cellulite! Just rub them on your back upper thighs in the bath. It’s messy but so worth it.
I put the grounds in my composter daily.
I NEVER discard coffee grounds or old coffee! They are good in the garden, on the lawn, in compost, and sprinkled around the base of acid-loving plants and shrubs like rhodeodendron and evergreens. We’ve transplanted moss from all over the place into shady areas around the property, and the mosses thrive from having coffee grounds scattered on them. I did not realize they had so many other uses though.
I use coffee grounds and old coffee religiously in the garden and on my house plants! I just learned about this within the last year and since starting my plants are growing great and are greener than ever!!
i knew about using the coffee grounds in the garden, as a body scrub, composting but i did not know about the ants or using on the lawn. will be using that as well as the tea bags to enrich my lawn and hopefully get rid of the ants.
Coffee grounds makes great cellulite fighting body scrub!!!!! seriously!!!
I mix my coffee grounds with lotion or cream(any face or body lotion and cream will do)
and little bit of extra virgin coconut oil and Use it like a body scrub in shower and rinse out. It makes my skin so Smooooth and help remove appearance of cellulite over time. Most of cellulite treatment cream contains caffeines so do coffee. :)
My mom has always used coffee grounds in her soil and I have also done so, my flowers on my deck at my apartment are gorgeous. I also learned from her that if you have a rodent or rabbit problem mix the coffee grounds with ground up orange peels and it deters them, they hate the taste when it gets on there feet or fur.
It deters ants because of the acid, however it will not deter fire ants.
I also reuse my coffee grounds as a cleaner for dishes when camping.
I throw used coffee grinds and tea leaves on my lawn to enrich the soil
My grandmother always put her coffee grounds, among other things right into a pile in the garden, and that’s where I carried on the tradition.
For years we’ve been reusing our coffee grounds as a green way to control ants and now we use them in composting and fertilizing. So glad to get some other ideas on what to use them for!!! Thanks!
does anyone know how the coffee grounds rids you of ant infestation?
I have a terrible ant problem and I’m hoping this will work. I wanted something safe to use with my dogs.
Every morning I use my Scoop coffee maker and put my coffee grounds in my compost box.I don’t even need a filter.
I’ve been using them mixed in the garden fertilizer for the last two years and my garden seems to be much healthier, and produces more
