Unplug your electronics
Even when they are not being used, electronics – like coffee makers, TVs, and stereos – consume some energy. Today or tomorrow before you leave the house, unplug any electronics that aren’t being used.
I have already done this and have saved $35 on my electric bill. Use a timer on the tv and stereo for the times that you are not using them.
I haven’t convinced everyone at home, but I make it a habit before I leave my cube (work) each day and have been doing this since July of this year! I passed the info on last week to my office! Great goal!
I have been doing this lately and it has been challenging going after everyone to make sure the electronics, lights are out.
Yesterday, I bought some power strip cords and plugged a bunch of my gadgets into them. This morning when I left the house, rather than unplugging all of them, I just flipped the little red ‘off’ switch to cut the power.
I do this on a pretty regular basis. It made a difference on my electic bill.
I do this with my phone charger everyday. SO much energy is wasted. TVs though are harder to get to. It will be more challenging…
I do this with my coffee pot and any lights in a room not being used. I only use my air conditioner when I am at home. Anything electric is turned off when I leave the house except the fish tank.
I can’t believe I just heard of this tip a month ago. And to think. . .all these years. . . Since I live alone, doing this doesn’t irritate anyone. When my daughters visit (often) they just laugh & say “that’s Mom!”
I started unplugging my toaster and computer/printer, but like others I’ve found the tv/dvr to be harder to get to. I liked the idea about turning off the power strip. All of my home entertainment items are plugged into a power strip, so I’ll start turning that off when not in use.
I read this really interesting article today that talks about how important this is:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/10/30/vampire.electronics.ap/index.html
Excellent idea.
Chargers are the things most people just leave plugged in.. I should also remember to unplug easy things like lamps though. It’s a definite waste of energy, and it only take likes 2 seconds (if the outlet is easily accessible, of course).
Wouldn’t just turning off the powerstrip defeat the purpose? I thought the point was to unplug the appliances because they still drain energy if they are plugged in. Let me know, I want to try this and do it correctly. With the price of gas skyrocketing I need to save money where ever I can.
