Start a carpool
This is a great way to get acquainted with your coworkers, and save money and the environment at the same time. Today, talk to a few people at work about their interest in commuting with you. Or send out an email blast letting people know you’re available for carpooling. It’ll be fun.
I carpool everyday to and from University of Rhode Island with my best friend. We worked out our daily class schedules so we could save on gas and money and the environment while going to and from our nutrition classes. Then for long travels, I choose public transportation, like the train to save as well.
This is something I do on a daily basis, whether it involves using public transportation to work, or using one vehicle for everyone possible attending the same event. Sometimes we’ll meet up in a parking lot between all of our homes, and then carpool in one or two of the vehicles to our destination. Not only is it better economically and environmentally, but it’s just fun to spend that time with friends, and to make better friends.
I used to always use public transit and I loved it, read many great works of literature in the years I took the bus/light rail. But now I have kids who have to be dropped off/picked up at school/day care, and I’m one of those moms who puts a billion miles a year on the minivan. SIGH.
