Back in the day when I was growing up in Colorado I knew all of my neighbors — heck, I knew everyone on my street! Because we all knew each other, it was never an issue to borrow an egg, a cup of milk — or whatever neighborly thing you can think of. If nothing else, it was nice to be able to put a house with a name and a face.

Not so recently (six months ago) I moved into a new apartment building here in lovely San Diego and still have yet to meet most of my neighbors. So, this Halloween I set out to spread a Little Act of Kashiness by leaving surprise treats on their doors. I’m hoping that our naturally yummy treats will help break the ice and will inspire us all to reach out and get to know one other a little better. If this doesn’t work, I will be forced to resort to Option B — TRICK!

Have you or your neighbors done anything fun to get to know one another better?

I don’t see a note. How did they know it was from you? (But very awesome.)

Great question PepGiraffe – I’ve actually been asked this a few times :) While I didn’t include a note, I did follow-up with a few curious neighbors after-the-fact. They were a bit puzzled as to who left the gifts but were pleasantly surprised to hear that they had come from a neighbor. It unintentionally created a great conversation starter – go figure! And for those that I wasn’t able to connect with, I’m hoping they enjoyed the random Act of Kashiness, if nothing else. Very awesome indeed.
