Routine is So Overrated
This past Saturday, we decided to do things a little differently. I convinced my normally not-early-rising carpool mates to give up an extra 30 minutes of precious sleep so that we could get to school even earlier. When asked why, I simply said, “We’re going to spread Kashiness!”
After loading six large cardboard boxes full of reusable water bottles, a hand truck and 3 backpacks into the minivan we headed up north. Our mission for the day was to get people to change their routine.
So, humor me for a second, how many plastic cups do you think 270 MBA students go through in a day? You might guess roughly 2-3 cups a person, if they use one for OJ and one for water and maybe have a second helping somtime during the day. So, we’re talking maybe 800 or so, as a high estimate.
Nope, guess again. On any given Saturday, my class uses up to 2,000+ plastic cups, not to mention all the paper cups that are used for hot drinks. Now that’s just absurd. So on Saturday, 15 classmates and I stood in front of the water coolers at breakfast and lunch, almost karate-blocking the hands reaching for plastic cups. We handed them reusable water bottles and said, “Here, use this instead.”
Whether it’s waking up a little earlier than you’d like, or drinking from a reusable bottle instead of a disposable cup, breaking routine when it counts is what creating change is all about. What’s a little thing you’ve done lately to create positive change and break out of your routine?
