Today, we found a practical way to spread kindness. With all the budget cuts at schools in California, a motley crew of young families, singles and seniors set out to beautify a neighborhood school. We spent 2 hours toiling at Hancock Elementary, from raking leaves to picking up trash to cleaning the mystery food off the lunch tables. With over 20 bags of miscellany, we felt accomplished and, reflecting on it now, I think we added a little extra meaning to “Joy Bright” Hancock Elementary.

The personal payoff was realizing that my children think volunteering is fun. It feels good as a parent knowing that they’re growing in gratefulness by giving back.

Want to get connected in your community? Just do an online search for “volunteer [insert your city name]” and see what possibilities await you. Any kind of kindness will do.
