Kashi Bags in Unusual Places!

I (almost) always remember to bring my reusable grocery bags to the grocery store or farmer’s market, but on a recent trip to a “big box” retailer in my community, it completely slipped my mind. I was amazed by how many plastic bags I ended up using to pick up my random household goods...and it gave me an idea! I could spread a little Kashiness in an unexpected place and help myself remember to bring my own bags the next time! I decided to grab a bunch of Kashi reusable bags from the office, and stuffed some $1 off coupons in them. I threw them in my car and the next time I went to the retailer to pick up some toilet paper and other random stuff, I decided to surprise people in the parking lot with a free reusable bag to use for their own purchases!

Almost all of the folks I approached were both delighted and surprised. It was like a light bulb went off when I asked them if they wanted a free reusable Kashi bag to use in place of a plastic one from the store. If we all try to remember our reusable bags not only at the grocery store but at EVERY store think how many plastic bags we can save each year!

It would save the retailers money too and help keep prices down on the products we actually need—like toilet paper and toothpaste!

What is one way that you have changed your routine so that is more environmentally-conscious?

I just keep mine in my car. after shopping I put all the empty bags back into one of the cold pack zipper bags and leave it near the door so I can remember to put them back in my car. Folding the bags and putting them back into the one zipper bag makes it easier too, when shopping all you have to do is put it under the cart and when checking out you just hand the one bag to the bagger (or yourself) and they just pull out what they need and the rest just stay in the bag, that way you never forget to bring in enough bags. (I have done that before, bought more food then I thought I was going to get :)!!!)

That’s awesome. I have a bad habit of forgetting mine, unless i’m going to Aldi’s because you have to use them there. Which is how they keep prices lower for us. It would be great if you can get your products in there, because the lower income people that shop there are looking for quality, and you deliver. btw, whoever came up w/ a full sized sample box is a genius. Its so rare we see something really nice out of a company anymore. Plus, the pita crackers are GREAT!

My girlfriend had gone to Japan & found some neat reusable bags that roll up. So when the technology arrived in America I purchased them also. I can carry them in my purse all the time with me; because one never knows when you might need it & the prints on them are pretty too!

Besides using reusable shopping bags, we donate items we no longer need or use. We had to cut down some dying trees in our yard so we will replant new ones to keep the bank of our creek from washing away over the years. We use reusable cloths when cleaning…and always used washable diapers for our child!! :) (Sorry it’s more than one but maybe my tips will spur someone else to do a bit more!)

Love to use recycle bags. Living in DC it’s a win win when you use your own bags instead of the stores paper/plastic. Not only are you helping the environment but you’re saving a few cents too. I always keep a few in the car when I’m in another part of town (Md or Va) since they still do not charge for using paper/plastic bags.

I compost fruit & uncooked veggie peelings, egg shells, stale bread, dried flowers and the like. For a while I lugged them by subway to a tri-weekly collection site in Union Square (I live in NY city) but was blessed to find a neighbor with a backyard composter.

Yay kashi! What a great thing to do! Aww, I want a Kashi bag too!
I turn the water off while I brush my teeth after I wet my toothbrush instead of just letting it run down the drain. SOe days I can’t get upstair to wash my hair. I can’t walk up wuthout help because of health problems. Whan I wash my hair in the sink I turn the water off after I wet it and turn it back on when I’m ready to rinse. And I use warm water instead of hot. I use mininal lighting also, I turn the lights off when nobody is in the room. I hand wash and line dry my clothes sometimes. I use reuseable bags at the store. When we had a car I kept them in the trunk so I didn’t have to worry about forgetting them.

You can find some really beautiful and unique reusable bags (and other containers) at reusablebags.com. I’ve purchased Basura Bags (made from juice pouches) and given them as gifts – they’re really pretty, practically indestuctible, can hold a ton of stuff and they benefit people (especially women & single mothers) in third world nations AND the environment.

The last time I was in for physical rehab I was on a feeding tube because I had aspiration pneumonia. I wasn’t allowed to eat anything, I wasn’t even allowed ice chips or water, and I gained fifty pounds in three months. It was so aggrivating and discouraging, the nurses woke me at 6:00am every Saturday to weigh me and I gained three to five pounds a week. I had always had weight problems, as long as I can remember people called me names because of my weight. I was finally getting to a point where I didn’t hate the way I looked. They must have had the flow rate on my tube to high, because I was getting shots of insulin and lantis several times a day. When they stopped the tube feedings I didn’t need them as often. It’s beem a long time since I needed either, thank goodness!
I was determibed to lose all that weight, and when I was allowed to start eaitng again I ate as little as I could get away with. I didn’t have a very big appetite anyway and it was easy NOT to eat what I got when I first came off the tube. You think hospital food is bad? I got what they call “mechanical soft” food. It’s pureed. Think baby food, that’s what I got, blobs of orange (carrots), yellow (corn), green (beans or peas) and brown and grey (mystery meat or potatoes with gravy) I
weighed 172 pounds when I was released. I was only 4’10” then. I’m 4’7”now…yes I shunk…a good reason not to use too much hot water lol. When I came home I started exercising as soon as I was able, which wasn’t for awhile. When I started I could barely do 10 crunches but I added more every day, and different exercises. I got a bit carried away and was spending two hours exercising every moring before I knew it. I got down to 75 pounds without even realizing it. That was too low. I weigh about 80 pounds now which is a good weight for me according to my doctors because I’m so small. I’ve maintained my weight for three years. I exercise for about 45 minutes first thing every morning unless I oversleep. I try to avoid junk food, I haven’t eaten a potato chip since I’ve been off the tube. I never started eating them again, I figure I went so long without them I don’t need them. I’ll eat pretzels once in a while, the least healthy food I eat is a poptart for my snack at night. I usually have a salad with lunch and dinner. I don’t use dressing, I like a little bit of lime juice and black pepper on it. I don’t use salt, we don’t even keep it in the house. I don’t use mayo either, I like brown or spicy mustard. I use horseradish sauce instead of tartar sauce on fish. I don’t eat beef or pork, only seafood and chicken or turkey. And I never eat white bread, it isn’t very healthy and I like the taste of whole grain breads better. Kashi, you should start making bread, I bet it would be delicious! Just don’t make it too expensive! :o)

I buy reusable bags to take my donations (food and personal care items) to the local Sharing Center. I give them these bags as part of my donation. They appreciate receiving the bags since they are typically short on “paper” bags.
