Five Green Things You Can Do Today

By Kashi Read more healthy living

Green living may start a fresh way of thinking for you, and many aspects of it are simple to follow and can save you a little of your hard-earned money. The small steps count — they’re the ones that will make the planet a better place to live for years to come. Here are five things you can do today to get started:

  1. Pay your bills online. You not only save paper by not writing checks and mailing envelopes, but you also reduce fuel consumption by the trucks and planes that transport the checks.
  2. Adjust your thermostats. This applies to heating and air conditioning units as well as water heaters.
  3. Change your light bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs use one-quarter the electricity of regular light bulbs and last several years longer.
  4. Buy locally grown food. Whenever possible, reduce the amount of fossil fuels it takes to get your food from the farm to your table.
  5. Start a carpool. Cut down on fuel emissions and save yourself and a few other people a lot of money on gas.

I try to live as green as possible! I even cloth diaper my baby. There are so many benefits to that, just google it ;)

I follow all the five steps already! My Prius plate reads, “SAVE GAS”. Speeders either pass and miss the point or safely follow and obey the law when we drive!

I changed every lightbulb in the house to compact fluorescents. My electric usage dropped over 10%. Total out-of-pocket cost for bulbs was about $120.00. I’m saving $15-$20 per month. Less than a year I paid for the bulbs! LED will be even better, just to pricey for the bulbs at the moment.

Open your windows! I have found that by opening my windows and using ceiling fans to circulate air I can keep my summer air conditioning use to minimum.

This is a great way to get the ball rolling for people who have no idea where to begin. I myself already apply all 5 of these to my daily living.
